Ever heard of modern cents being used for this?

A handyman doing some work on my place advised buying several rolls of recent date pennies to throw on the roof shingles. He advised that the zinc in them would leach out over time to avert the growth of moss.

He added that you can purchase pellets or powder with zinc in them that do the same thing, but just buying the one cent coins would actually be less expensive.

Moss is good because it can filter contaminants out of water

Not on a roof. :/ (Moss, that is).

It holds water that can get under the shingles, and it breaks down the asphalt.

The zinc doesn’t leech out easily

The copper plating holds it in

Plus the zinc is not in a powder or pellet. It’s stamped under tons of pressure

Moss is not acceptable to the new Insurance regulations. They require removal beforing or renewing insurance on homes. At least in WV.

Cents would likely work because they disintegrate on exposure to air and water. I would be concerned they'd end up in the gutters and drains. Bleach works but be sure not to inhale the droplets.

No good can come of zinc pennies but dissolving a little in vinegar might ward off a cold. The science here is less than conclusive.

Zinc pennies make reasonably good washers when nailing galvanize to wood and they're much cheaper than real washers.

Do you have to use 10 of them per 10 penny nail?

Copper works even better than zinc, at least according to this guy.

I find it unlikely pennies will stay in place.

Perhaps if you hold each one down by driving a galvanized nail through it..?
