Oh no, I posted the wrong photo up top, I'm not going to try to edit it because it might delete the whole thread, just don't pay any attention to that photo above.

I should have added this to the original post, but you can also pick athletes that are currently still playing as being overrated.

@doubledragon Were you thinking of using Carlos Valderrama as an example of overrated players?

  • LandrysFedoraLandrysFedora Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭✭✭

For the money he makes I have to go with Francisco Lindor in baseball.

No, that was a picture I had downloaded a while back for a athletes with crazy hair thread, I have a ton of pictures downloaded in my phone that I haven't erased yet and I clicked on his picture by mistake. I have a ton of Aaron Rodgers pictures I need to get rid of as well.

I've heard Kirk Cousins name mentioned a lot as being overrated.

    Mike Tyson is very overrated.

I don’t think he’s really even a top ten heavyweight fighter all time yet gets lauded as such quite often. He was certainly immensely popular and it was lot of fun watching him knock out tomato cans. He maybe falls into a ‘what could have been’ category, I suppose, but he ducked a lot of his generations best fighters and when he eventually fought them, he lost. I love the highlight reel his career offered but can think of no signature win over a class fighter in their prime on his resume.

    So, Iron Mike for me.

Don’t feel bad I just cleaned out about 50 old/weird pics on my IPad the other day and I swear there were about 20-30 goofy pics of Cam in there. Had me wondering if I even posted half of them lol.

I’ve always thought Brett Favre was a bit overrated. For all of his greatness you almost knew he would throw an interception at the worst possible moment.

  • TabeTabe Posts: 6,060 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Cal Ripken.

In half of his 20 full seasons, he hit .264 or lower. HALF. Career 112 OPS+. Finished with an OPS+ under 100 nine times (admittedly, all after the age of 30).

I don't think so. Only because I can't think of ever hearing from anyone that he was great to begin with. Then or now. The only opinions I have ever heard about him is that he was tough, durable, and a good fit for those Steeler teams. And a bit goofy. Nothing EVER about him being a SUPERSTAR quarterback. Ever. I think he would be the first person to agree with me.

It's ridiculous, I've got over 2,000 pics on my phone, and my phone is so filled with pics that it has slowed down and it keeps threatening me saying all of my space is almost used up. I really have to start deleting soon!

You're kidding, right? LOTS of people have called him great or a superstar.

To add; The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant is the biggest Terry Bradshaw fan of all time. She still has her Terry Bradshaw scrapbook that she put together when she was a young girl. Idol worship! I could tell you an amusing story about when she finally got to meet him a couple of years ago. Maybe later. Anyway, I just went out to the back porch where she's relaxing, and I asked her, "Have you ever heard anyone say that Terry Bradshaw was a great quarterback?" She said, "No." Case closed.

Agreed, which is what makes him so phenomenally overrated. Not Catfish Hunter level overrated, of course, but still really, really overrated.

This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

Well, at least one person disagrees - the person who edited his Wikipedia entry:

"Widely considered to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time"

    Case closed.

O.k., Tabe, but......ANYBODY can write ANYTHING they want on Wikipedia. Doesn't mean a thing. Give me another example. Not from some unknown source.....i.e. "Widely considered to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time." Who exactly are all these people who "Widely consider.....etc.?" Means nothing. And...Chuck Noll didn't exactly think Bradshaw was all that great... He would have known best. Why would anyone else think Bradshaw was great? Bradshaw was a quarterback who fit the mold of the era. Just like Ken Stabler. Tough guys who got the job done........nobody ever called them great. That GREAT stuff title is reserved for the flashly pretty boys.....win or lose.

That's kinda the point. Your wife said she'd never heard anyone say that. Now you/she have.

But Bleacher Report put him at #19 all-time:

Athlon Sports put him at #18:

Clutch Points put him at #13:

Tabe, this is a good conversation. We might be getting a little off track but so what....I've made a few phone calls because this has got me going. Calls to Friends close to the action. I ask them, Do you think Bradshaw was a great QB? Answers range from NO to No to ARE YOU KIDDING? to THE DEFENSE WAS GREAT. Anyway.... I still can't think of ANYONE! that I know personally who thought he was a great QB. BUT.........maybe some people do think he was great. If that is the case then you are correct. He is overrated.

The fact he got over 80% of the votes as a Hall of Fame finalist shows that some people thought he was great. Unless you think voters are voting for guys they think aren't great.

Who are the most overrated athletes of all time?

    without a doubt, Jon Gruden.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

I agree Bradshaw is overrated. To some degree, he was a QB of his time. very strong arm, lots of deep throws, lots of INT.

I would add Aikman to the list as well. the 3 rings clearly weighed heavily on voters minds as his stats do not warrant HOF induction.

is there a Championship threshold where average or above average QBs will get HOF induction regardless of the statistical record? It seems 3 is that number. Jim Plunkett has 2 and is outside looking in.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Staubach is certainly revered, but I feel it is with good reason. I don't know if I would feel as adamant about this if I hadn't lived in Dallas Cowboys territory for these last many years. I say this only because I have been inundated with stories of his success, and he seems worthy of his high regard.

Steve Garvey must have been overrated (by me), because back when I was much younger, I pretty much assumed that he'd be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. I wasn't even close to getting it right. :)
