1984-S $10 Olympic Proof

Hope everyone's doing well! I came across this 1984s LA Olympic Gold Eagle Proof recently and while I see nothing about the coin that seems "off", I am having a heck of a time finding any examples with the same packaging. It's in a mint box as is typical...but with a sleeve around it I've not seen in other examples. Rather than saying "Olympic Gold Eagle", it says "Olympic Ten Dollar"....and then has a sticker on reverse that appears as though it was sold at the Games, versus direct from mint. Does anyone know anything about this or have an opinion?

Thanks 8n advance!

Thanks! I do have the initial info on the coin and mintage. My question is more around the packaging itself....the examples I see for sale all seem to have packaging like below and this one is quite different. Maybe the difference is this was sold there and not from the mint? Seller confirms it was purchased at the actual games....they and their parents worked at it back in '84. Pretty cool stuff.

For an 84 Olympiad thats in rough shape. Marks below TRUST on the obv and visible hairlines (even with my bad eyesight) Most of these grade PF69 and MS69 with some 70 grades out there. I would pass on this one unless you could get it just over melt. Just my opinion.

EDIT- looks like some haziness as well

I agree. Rough shape indeed. It's got a few marks here and there and definite light haze.....but I actually got it well under melt so I couldn't pass it up. The fact that it was bought at the Games trumps condition for me....irs not a grader coin anyway!

Gold under melt is a no-brainer for me.

The company I worked for back then was an
Olympic Coin Distributor, and we had an
actual 2-story booth at the L.A. Coliseum Olympic venue
selling the gold and silver coins.

That clear printed label "Purchased at" was made for sales
at the Coliseum - sales were incredible for
    that week!

That is the oddity here! The coin was not in the typical US Mint capsule. It was in a flimsy and fitted 2 piece little plastic coin case. Im not sure if the prior owner damaged the original capsule or what...but its definitely not in the original.

Why would anybody sell under melt?

Perhaps they need the money and they can't find anyone who wants to buy this coin at full melt value. Most modern gold coins with issues are treated like scrap gold. Gold refineries usually don't pay more than 95% of melt value and you have to pay for insured shipping and wait several weeks for payment.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I'm glad you got it for under melt because that is all is is worth. The coin, by itself, is melt bucket material. It is always possible that you can find a buyer for more than melt on eBay because of the "sold at the Olympics" packaging but can you get enough to cover the fees?
