While the toning is field deceptive, I don't see anything limiting the coin to MS65. Not attractive to me, but is a typically poorly struck 1940 S. I would not pay 64 money for this coin regardless of grade. Then just my opinion.

But, yeah- it is butt ugly.
My kind of butt ugly though. It was why I purchased it and sent it to PCGS for grading.
Interesting posts of Walkers over the last few weeks. Definitely has given me more of an appreciation for well struck Walking Liberty Halves... I'd have been in the 62 camp on this one...

Thanks for an interesting posting - I had not seen one as poorly struck. I believe I see contact esp. on the eagle breast, head and wing apex, even though metal color differences can occur on poorly struck areas. Also breast and left forearm and hand/wrist of Ms. Liberty. I would have guessed 58.

Ugly toned. I would say XF45, but based on the other recent S mint Walker I have no idea.

Hard to say with that lighting and image, but it looks like a poorly struck MS example, hopefully no higher than a 63.

Looks like it wasn't properly rinsed.
No higher than 63, IMHO.

1940-S is a poorly struck issue and this looks to have some discolored areas which appear to be rub and luster breaks. AU55 and butt ugly.

I understand this is a weak strike... but based on the OP pictures, I would never consider it an MS coin.... AU at best...IMHO.... Cheers, RickO

World's shortest GTG - my guess was 62.
Had I guessed timely, I would have been in the 62 camp.

Congrats, MS60 is a rare grade these days.
I love your ugly ass coin posts! That is one only a mother could love.

That's what I was essentially going to say - that grade is far rarer than most other '44S walkers - so it has that going for it!
I can see the eBay listing now:
1944-S Walker - SUPER LOW POP - L@@K!!
LOL.
Out of 5,766 mintstate examples graded by PCGS only nine have received the lofty grade of MS60.

My mom said she doesn't like it.

True but there are about 6000 graded higher by PCGS alone.
