OK, this is a first for me....

I was looking through double eagles on Great Collections and came across the coin below. I have never seen anything like this. How was this done?

You’ll never find toning like that again
lol, truly a one of a kind!
Looks like a Daguerrotype or a tin-type but plated onto gold... not something you see every day...

No answer to your question, but it reminded me of the stone on the corner with photos as to not to forget a person.
Photos on a smooth stone, and in color, Pretty cool way to say hay.
Negativity vibes ...and spooky . BOO !
That's kind of spooky looking,,jmo

I like it. While I understand the "Damage" on the label, to me it's "Enhanced".
That is very interesting. And strange that some sort of detail/explanation is not given in the coin description. I cannot tell, from the pictures, if that is an image transfer or addition. The edge wear suggests peeling, but could also be wear. Cheers, RickO
Glued on photo.

Just noticed GC added this to the listing, interesting...
A striking piece featuring a portrait of a young child gazing out from the planed reverse of the coin. The image does not appear to etched into the surface, nor is it on another surface which was then adhered to the coin but rather it seems the image was developed or transferred directly onto the surface by a process we are unfamiliar with. The rims around the image give indications that it was likely placed in a bezel or frame and likely worn as a locket or fob. Truly like nothing we have ever seen or handled and certainly a piece which elicits instant intrigue.
Unless it's your Great Great (maybe another Great) Granddaughter it's actually only worth melt! What's the weight?
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
A very interesting coin!
I have two questions out of curiosity:
How does PCGS know the coin is an 1898 (Philadelphia) and not an 1898-S (San Francisco)?
Did PCGS weigh the coin before encasing it and if so what is the weight?

Most pictorials of this type are photo chemically etched onto the coin but this one looks a bit different -- hard to tell what the process is for sure without seeing it in hand.

Somebody really loved that baby.
That baby looks a bit like Ron White…
Hah! That made me think of this...
