Time to wait between resubmission's for upgrade?

Do you think 2 months is to soon to resend a graded PCGS Pr 67 buffalo nickel for reconsideration again? I sent in a few proof nickels for reconsideration and one of three received a higher grade to 68. I think the other two deserve the 68 grade also. I'm wondering if two months is too early to resubmit the two which didn't upgrade, Does the time between submissions for the same coin matter?

I think the time between submissions matters in some instances, such as very easily recognizable coins. However, with no disrespect for a PR67 Buffalo nickel that you feel deserves a higher grade, I doubt that it qualifies for one of those instances.

No wait necessary but as you know there is a significant retail premium associated with a jump from 67 to 68 and I doubt that PCGS is going to hand out the higher grades too freely...but always worth a try!

Suggest that you call PCGS customer service and ask them. Let us know what they say. ;)

No but the breakup is still fresh

I don't see why it would matter ... as long as you pay the bill.

    Comment retracted.

OP is using the "reconsideration" service. My post was about resubmitting the coin raw (i.e., a crack out).

  • I believe that PCGS must know that the coin(s) have been recently submitted for a reconsideration. How can they not, the cert. number is part of the process.

If you resubmit too soon, they may think they are being buffaloed?

reconsideration is hard to get. crack out is easier but be carful with expensive coin for crack out.

I believe @winesteven has had considerable success with the reconsideration service.

Yes that’s true, but another viable option is “Regrade”. While PCGS removes the coin from the holder before it’s given to the graders with Regrade, they guarantee your grade will not drop!

For me, I choose to use “Reconsideration” instead of “Regrade”, because the coins I submit each has a CAC sticker. If unsuccessful (and the majority of my submissions unfortunately are unsuccessful), the coin comes back in it’s original holder, as it was never removed. If I succeed with an upgrade, since it’s via Reconsideration, the new holder will retain the same cert number as submitted! So if the upgrade is only a “+”, then CAC will AUTOMATICALLY reapply their sticker for only $5 or so each. If it gets upgraded via Reconsideration to the next whole grade number or higher, CAC will not automatically reapply their sticker, since it must then requalify at that new higher grade, at normal fees. But since the cert number remains the same, at least you can point out to CAC that “surface issues” should not be a problem.

  • Do you think that a CAC sticker biases graders at PCGS towards an upgrade. I'm wondering whether or not I should CAC my 67's before submitting for reconsideration.

I can't say with ANY degree of certainty, but in my uneducated opinion, the graders do see the CAC, so there can possibly be a subconscious positive bias in our favor. If I were in your situation, I would definitely get the CAC's applied beforehand, even though that means extra expense for those that do get an upgrade! In theory the coin must merit the upgrade, but as we all agree, things are somewhat subjective.
