1873-1973 San Francisco Cable Car Centennial Commemorative
In 1973 the US Mint put out a silver and bronze commemorative medals in 2 different sizes. I posted the smaller silver dollar size ones last week. I was talking to someone about these medals and he mentioned he has a set of San Fransisco Cable Car Centennial by The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society Pacific Coast Chapter. He also sent me this article that was published in the CalCoin News Quarterly Magazine Fall issue of 1973.
.
The article below describes how it all started and how the medal was designed
Boris Buzan of Laguna Beach sculptured the models for the Cable
Car Centennial medal. Among his many medallic triumphs is the
80th issue of Che Society of Medalists, featuring Apollo 1 1, one of
the most popular issues of that outstanding series. Mr. Buzan is
currently completing the Signers of the Declaration of
Independence series for Presidential Art Medals, originally begun
by the late Ralph Menconi

Notice in the small picture the reverse design of the US Mints Commemoratives I posted last week.
And both obverses of the commemoratives are similar.

Nice article. Happen to have one lying around. The silvers are a bit more scarce.
My US Mint Commemorative Medal Set
That's a great commemorative........ Makes me think of the time long ago when I was riding on a San Francisco cable car. China Town. Just visited the Fortune Cookie Factory. Then.....my girlfriend (thank God she's a distant dim memory) and I hopped on the Cable Car! It was all fun and a great time until I spotted a speeding car heading directly at the Cable Car!! I grabbed her and jumped off. Some people did.....some people didn't. What a wreck!!!! 🚋🤕🚑
Really nice!! I like those historical society medals.
@Hydrant glad you got off in the nic of time!
@Goldminers yours looks pristine!
@coinJP thanks, I guess I’m really going into a deep hole with numismatic medals……..loL

Nothing wrong with that! There are many interesting subject matters and designs.
I'm really turning into an exonumia collector I think. I still purchase seated and bust coins but most of my recent purchases are tokens and medals. Can't believe how many hard times tokens I have now. Got to get it all imaged up.😎
.
That would be very enjoyable to see! Try to get some up soon. I miss when @Broadstruck used to post the odd stuff and some really great HTT’s. The last real coin I bought was a commem in an old ANACS holder. Just can’t get into the same design as sets

That's something cool to own
@coinsarefun ... Thanks for the interesting history along with the medals....Cheers, RickO
Does anyone know who the designer of the U.S. Mint Cable Car
Medal is, with the TRM initials on the obverse of the medal?
cool medals, reminds me of when we lived in San Francisco when I was in the service. 68-70. We lived a block away from the end of the cable car run and would often walk over, jump on, and go for a ride. A lot of fun.
@brokecollector - the mint medal was designed by Thomas D McClure of Oakland California.
Correction- Thomas R. McClure
Thank You!
Happy 150th to the San Francisco Cable Car system.
