1986 Topps Steve Garvey PSA 10 - opinions

It's no secret that I collect Steve Garvey. I've been collecting his cards for 20 years, and I've yet to run across his 1986 Topps card in PSA 10. That changed today. This just popped up on ebay, and I must say, I'm not impressed with the card. I feel my 9 is at least close to being as nice as this 10, but I'd like the opinion of the board as well. What say you?

Maybe it is just the scans, but it appears to me that the corners are better on the 10, though the top-left edge (black portion) looks better on your 9. Just what my flawed eyes tell me, anyway.

I like your 9 better than the 10. For one thing, that orange mark on The Garv's hat is distracting.

I have a PSA 10 that has completely clean black borders, but in looking at it right now, I notice it measures almost 1/16" short :* . I've had it for many years.

    Wanna sell it?

  • I like your 9 much better than the 10. Both cards are really well centered.

Huge print spot on the 10.

The black looks brighter in the 10 to me. Otherwise , both are super cards. If the price is right , I would at least bid on the 10 to whatever you are willing to pay. The 9 looks like it could be in a 10 holder, but the 10 does not look out of place in its holder. There are no perfect cards.

Yep - and once you see it, it's difficult to see anything else!

If it was of him as a Dodger, I'd consider it, but since he's a Padre..........no.

The print marks on his hat and in the background of the border make the 10 worse.

If I am buying raw? The first things I notice is the print spot on his hat and that yours is off centered enough to annoy me so to me I would probably just take the 10 over your 9 because of that, but it's splitting hairs so if I were you I would just wait for a nicer 10 to come up for sale.

You could submit those two cards 100 times and 1 in 10 both would get a 10. The difference is so minute a picture of a scan will not show the telling details.
An aside. I like your 9 just as much.

  • The print mark on the 10 is horrendous. I will say your your PSA 9 left to right centering keeps it out of a 10 holder IMO
But I’d rather have yours than the PSA 10PD

As others have said, I'm not a fan of the print mark.

On another note, I forgot just how nice high grade 1986 Topps cards are.

Personally, the deep black is more important to me than the print mark, so I would prefer the 10, but as others say, I’d probably just wait for a card (9 or 10) with neither issue.

You know I could care less about graded cards, so this is just an opinion based on what I see with my naked old eyes. I have 100s of that card, but have never really looked for the best one. As long as a card is centered and flaw free, I am happy with it. That is probably what sits in my Garvey files and who knows, I may have a 10 in hiding and n ot even know it. I doubt it, but you never know (and I won't either).

The 10 seems to have a darker black area at top and the centering L/R looks perfect, where as your 9 looks bigger border on the right.

I loved all the cards when I was buying them in the 80s, but looking back, that was a terrible decade for designs and such. I am more of a 70s guy for that. I do like the 86 Topps design. It might just be my favorite Topps set of the 80s, besides 1980 (which usually gets lumped in with the 70s and before Fleer and Donruss joined the game.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.
  • The first things I noticed were the 9 is off center L/R and the top left corner looks soft to me. Like someone else said so appropriately though, once you spot the print mark on the 10, its all you see on that card. Both great cards though in one of my favorite sets ever.

Card should never have gotten a ten with that big print defect

Agree with the post up thread that the 9 is off center a tad. Buy the 10 - you’ll be glad to have it.

Thanks for everyone's input. I think I'll hold off until a nicer 10 comes up for sale.

  • I am looking for a 2005 Studio Portraits White- black&white Garvey (any serial#). It looks like the bottom one in this pic except the portrait is on black & white instead of color. Does anyone have one available for trade? I have several other varieties (same set) to use as trade. Thanks

  • I definitely like your 9 better. In fact, I don't understand how that 10 got into a PSA 10 holder in the first place with that big orange print mark on the Garv's hat? That is a good example of what can be maddening about 10's vs. 9's

  • StamkosFanStamkosFan Posts: 255 ✭✭✭

I'll say it. To me the 10 looks trimmed. Top edge is razor sharp and lays flat against the case border. Left edge lays flat against the case border. The right edge starts to get a border gap as you go down....it's clear as day. The bottom edge isn't straight either

Who is Steve Garvey? Just kidding, I can't see him in anything other than a dodger uniform. It's even worse than seeing my favorite Yankee Graig nettles in Padres uniform. It's just not right.

Jackstraw, any of the backs and any serial number as long as it has the white (gray) border and the black & white portrait. Thanks a lot for looking.
