NEWP: 1819 25c, B4, Retained Cuds

I’m working on a date set of bust quarters and am not collecting by variety (at least for now). Already have the 1819 small 9 covered (B3 variety), but was compelled to add this B4 to the set as I find the retained cuds at the date visually fascinating. Rea rates this die marriage an R4+ and late die state examples with retained cuds at the date are rare. Even at the humble G6 grade one can fully appreciate the dramatic deterioration of the obverse die. The coin has nice color and eye appeal to boot. Thanks for another great addition @coinlieutenant.

Truly a remarkable and rare bust quarter, only a dozen or two exist with the retained double cud through the date. And this one has some of the nicest toned surfaces I have seen. Great coin!

Excellent example! I highly support spicing up a bust quarter date set with coins like that. Another you could consider is the 1818 B9 with heavy clashed arrowheads above Liberty. Visually striking and just as hard to find with maybe 30-40 or so out there.

I like the clashed arrowheads 1818 B9 a lot and wouldn’t hesitate to snag one if the right coin came along. Oddly, after more than a couple years of searching I still haven’t found a nice 1818 example of any die variety to add to my set, even though it’s the most available date in the large diameter series. Quite a few attractive high grade examples have come around in that timeframe, but really nice VF-low AU examples with great eye appeal have proven to be elusive.

@Wahoo554 Really nice mid-grade bust quarters are a huge challenge. The barber collectors don't know how good they have it!

They rarely wore down that far without getting banged up or cleaned along the way. I heard from a friend that 1807 is also very hard to find in mid-grade despite being very available as a date.
Is 1818 the only date you are missing for the date set (minus the 1823 I assume

The 1819 B-4 die cracks are at least as scarce and eye catching the "Bearded Goddess" bust half cracks, but much more reasonable price wise, if they can be found.
Still have a number of holes to fill… I still don’t have a draped bust example, though have come close to pulling the trigger a few times. Ignoring the 1823 and 1827 I still need the following dates: 1818, 1822, 1825, 1831, 1833, 1836, 1837 and 1838… Just so tough to find these coins in the VF-low AU range with excellent eye appeal. Agree that Barber collectors have it quite good!
