How can they call American Eagles "coins"? They don't even work in vending machines...

They are beautiful bullion. Not really coins.

Stop 🛑. Go immediately and google the difference between a commemorative and a legal tender coin. Then report the answer. It’s awesome 👏🏿

Commemoratives don’t have a value like $1 on them. Your $50 gold does $25 palladium $100 platinum. Lots of these questions are just a google away 🤓

I really wanted to ask "why do we consider buying eagles to be 'coin collecting'"...

Because they're coins and some people like collecting them. If you think about it for a minute, you'll get it. :)

US commemorative coins have denominations and they are all legal tender.

Neither do Kennedy halves, in most cases. I'd also bet that some vending machines won't take silver coins either.

    One word: exonumia

    Numismatics is a broad field.

    Coin collecting is common vernacular.

This is a semantic waste of time.

Where's @coloneljessup to explain "attention seeking"?

Not so much for my own attention.... I do like to provoke some chatter... maybe I'm being too much a provocateur?

It's certainly not seeking attention for the rest of us.

Some chatter is just chatter. What is anyone going to learn from the question posed on this thread?

Feel free to do whatever you want. I'm just one opinion. I'm not the forum police or representative of anyone other than myself.

And for the record, some people don't consider them "coins" or any other NCLT, for that matter.

There may be some newer collectors especially who have never considered these semantic issues so they might find it thought-provoking.

P.S. - cents don't work in vending machines, either, why the exception of the old Post Office stamp machines.

Glad somebody thinks so. Semantics are important and fun. And we don't want to be anti-semantic...

Better question is why coinstars spit the pre-65 stuff back out instead of accepting it and then sorting it out at corporate.

    This sure sounds familiar..........

Ooh I know the answer! Because maybe they are looking for interesting opinions, and not answers!

... and maybe also trying to stir up a little controversy.

I do seem to have this tendency. I'm trying to get better.

The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It was first released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. It is struck only in the one-troy ounce, which has a nominal face value of one dollar and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver.

People trust them more as being valuable than they do bullion not made by the mint and backed up by the government. People recognize them and are less likely to be fake than some bullion they have never seen before. And they have attractive designs.

They are coins because the United States Mint declares them to be coins and issues them. Yes, they are categorized as NCLT, and they are mainly for collectors and stackers - but U.S. coins nonetheless. Cheers, RickO
