Traded silver and gold for clad.

Traded 1992, 1999, 2020 one tenth ounce gold American Eagles, plus the 1994, and 1995 silver proof American eagles in OGP ;for a 2009-D Washington quarter, today.
It's just a hobby. Next submission is anyone's guess.

I’d want to see both sides first since that would tell a better story. But if pressed I would say I hope you got cash back with your purchase.
Ok if you’re happy congratulations 🤠

Looking more deeply, I’m assuming it is FS-801 DDR. Difficult to tell from the image.
Looks like the doubled die to me!
My opinion is that I would never ever make such a trade. 3 tenth oz eagle $1000 2 ase’s high end $500-$1000 There is no way $1500-2000 For a quarter. Again I am a big proponent of buy what you like and if trading a grand or 2 for a 2009 quarter is your road to happiness fantastic. Thanks 🤠

That is one RARE doubled die quarter.
I'd much rather have that special piece than the pieces you traded

Really? I hope that quarter is what you think it is.... I think I see it, but not familiar with these varieties. Cheers, RickO
Emperors new clothes 🤠 Yup you might be right Pretty tough market for gold and silver. I guess I missed all the talk about the great quarter market. Without another specialty buyer its worth a quarter. The gold and silver 🤠$$$

The guy has 6 fingers and a thumb on the left hand. I am wondering how this Doubled die occurred there are the first 3 letters dropped way below normal but where is the rest of the doubling? ELL and then looks to be no more.

Nice doubled die.

@TwoSides2aCoin … what’s it worth?
I have never heard of that one. Learn something every day.
That’s actually one of the most dramatic Doubled Dies of the 21st cen. It is way more special than bullion, well done.
It looks like a 64 but even if it isn’t it should do way better over time than simple metal

This one was discovered not long after it was released. Look at the second "ELL" well below ELLINGTON.
Thanks Mike, well that's pretty distinct.

I have always done the opposite. Working up from boxes of clad like State Quarters etc. then silver to gold. Always thought of the clad rejects as sunk money to invest in something better. It's worked out good for me. I never thought of doing it in reverse....... Anyway....Good for you!
Five fingers and a thumb............. no wonder he could play the piano so well.
So that’s a$2000 coin. Anyone? I am willing to learn, try to at least understand a different opinion. I just don’t see it. Perhaps a value will help 🤠

First off 3/10 of an ounce of gold and 2 ounces of silver isn’t 2k it’s closer to 1k. That quarter is worth close to that if he gets a grade but multiples rarer so there is opportunity cost in there too

PCGS PG is less than $50usd for AU58. The coin was found in circulation. Most of these DDR coins graded MS66. I would have traded him a silver eagle for it. But, not a proof silver eagle. Surely, not gold.
Wow, nice pick up
So $50-1000 value. Thank you. I will keep checking the responses. For now I believe I have enough to confirm my original thoughts. Thanks 🤠

I will buy every single example offered to me for $50.
The above comment is plain silly. These are valuable, probably $1500 coin in Mint state.
The pictured example looks like it did indeed circulate a bit, though.
Anyway, not everyone's cup of tea, obviously. But for variety geeks, it is pretty exciting

Wow that is a dramatic doubled die!
Will be on the lookout for it.
A very tough variety to find, congrats!
I have been on the look out for years.

I can see the doubling and it is a well-known variety for clad collectors. There is a noticeable abrasion next to the E in E Pluribus that might prevent a straight grade. The coin looks well circulated and perhaps polished (need better photos). I'm curious about the obverse since the reverse strike is a bit weak. The rim disappears towards the top.

The first one I ever saw was in a PCGS holder about 6 years ago. Had a "buy now" price for $1000. On the eeeeebay. I hit the buy now button but seller never consummated the deal. Have had a standing offer locally of a grand for a nice AU since. We ( the seller and I) do have a contingency plan , in the event it doesn't grade or is not authentic.
And since my original purchases of the gold and silver is under $600, it seemed like a no brainer for this particular variety.
Of course I was met years ago, when first joining the boards, after purchasing a Cheerios dollar in the blister pack on eBay for $4k., with a lot of the same attitudes. I get that unwillingness to jump off a cliff. but since I offered to buy, this searcher/seller opted for the coin(s) over the cash. I respect that, too.
send it in and then we will have a better idea of how well you did
I'm sure if he found it in circulation the votes would already be in for a "You Suck". Very nice.
I didn't make up the price go look it up for yourself. Maybe instead of saying my comment is silly, maybe you can tell PCGS their price guide is silly. I'd buy every single example above AU58 for $50 also. The 2009-D Washington, DC DDR is price guide valued at $3000 in MS66. Where the bulk of these coins grade. The coin in this thread definitely shows circulation and from the picture may have been plated.
I could care less how much the OP paid for the coin. He placed a value on the coin he felt it was worth. He then asked for comments. I viewed the coin as if I was buying the coin. I did the homework I needed to come to the conclusion the coin was not worth more than $50, to me. That's what I would pay for it. My answer also included the means of exchange for the coin. Again, what I would have traded for the coin, if I had 3 gold coins and 2 ASE. I'll end this by apologizing to you for my ill-thought-out silly comments interrupting your Sunday evening.
I thought he was calling me silly. I just ignored it because we were asked for an opinion and not for someone else’s thoughts on our opinions. 🤓

@TwoSides2aCoin it sounds like you know the market you’re in way better than I do. I would have looked at the guide and pop reports and passed, but I haven’t been looking for this coin for a long time. Congrats on the pick up. It’s a neat variety I hadn’t seen before. I think you’ll enjoy this one more than you were that bullion you swapped it for.
@Snaps @Jzyskowski1
No offense. You are, of course, entitled to your opinions. But, looking up PCGS price guide for an AU58 is not exactly "doing your homework." To my knowledge, none of these have ever sold anywhere near $50. In fact, an example in PCGS MS66 sold in Heritage for $3066 in 2016.
So, the $50 remark just comes off as "silly." And if people are really trying to understand a price point for this extremely rare variety, I believe it is misleading.
As I said, I will buy them all at $50, even in roadkill condition. I dont own a single example, by the way. I just find them as interesting as the OP.

Ok if you can’t let it go are you saying that AU 58 is $1000 Don’t slam us and then walk away with out a price point. The dang thing is circulated ok? It’s not a dang 66! Pretend all you want but dang dude it is what it is. What is your point?
🎶 shout shout, let it all out 🎶

Breathe...
No one is "slamming" you. I already pointed out that the OP's example is circulated. I am also pointing out that it is in no way a $50 coin, ok? The OP paid around $1000. Does that answer your question? I agree with that value
Usually (not always) when a die variety is selling for $3000 in the highest grade and there are only a handful known, a lightly circulated example like what the OP posted is still worth a pretty penny. I would say 1/3 is a good starting point, yes. They don't come up for sale very often
By all means, look around for one and get back to us.

Why I believe I made it clear it’s not something I would be interested in. I was asked for my opinion not if I wanted one. Thanks 🙏

And you asked for help understanding the price. It's not an argument, just different viewpoints converging. Some from experience, and some from those who really don't understand the market for these. I meant no offense. Have a good one

I think you will regret the deal.
Why I believe I made it clear it’s not something I would be interested in.
and yet you're interested enough to make nine posts in the thread to validate your disinterest, that's just weird to the nth degree.
I get that unwillingness to jump off a cliff.
Joe, you are sure catching flak for this, strange but that's the way the NutRanch seems to function. my take is that nobody reads posts anymore, like ones that talk of "conti9ngency plans" between the buyer and seller. that's how it goes, though. maybe you'll reach the point that I reached, taking care on what stories to tell of coin shop experiences. I used to think members would be interested in hearing what goes on day-to-day and discovered they are mostly interested in criticizing what they don't understand.
I have a funny "cliff" joke for you, I think you'll like it:
--- A guy is walking along a steep cliff when the ground gives way and he starts falling over the edge. In desperation he reaches out and grabs a small tree growing out of the cliff. As the minutes pass he realizes he's starting to lose his grasp so he shouts to the Heavens in desperation, "God, I really need your help right now. If you're listening tell me what to do."
--- A moment later he hears a booming voice from above, "LET GO OF THE TREE."
--- He thinks for a second and then shouts out, "Is anyone else up there??"
don't sweat it, Joe, things have a way of working out for you.
I don't know about regrets. I may take a loss(not that I think so). But I would gladly pay up for any examples. I've been looking a long time. Sometimes it's just better to buy what is available. This guy who found it has searched tens of thousands of quarters looking.
I also have a few collectors searching for a '92-D Close AM cent. Some moderns are freaky rare.
Oh, and I'd be happy if this quarter graded AU.
Given that you mentioned a contingency plan it sounds like you have this well under control. Please update with a grade if you do send this to one of the TPG's
