Commemorating making it through another "alarm clock revelry" I thought that I would start a thread celebrating Sunrises on Coins.

This is open to all struck or cast planchets - coins, tokens, medals, whatever you have that depicts a sunrise, or sunset for that matter . . .

I'll get things started with these. Do you have any?

Post 'em if you got 'em . . . .

How do we know if the coin is showing a sun rise or a sun set? Aren't we making an assumption here?

Does the sun rise, or does the earth set?

In the case of the WLHs posted, Adolph Weinman’s intent was to show Liberty striding into the dawn of a new day, an allegory for America emerging as a new world power.
So I vote those are legit sunrises.

This one is kinda cool, because there is not an actual sunset or sunrise on the coin, but the toning gives the optical illusion of one.

How many US coin designs show the sun on both sides of the coin. The Saint-Gaudens double eagle is the only one that I can think of but there's probably others.

It depends upon whether you consider the classic commemorative half dollars "coins" or not, or even the more modern dollars / halves. Many of those have rising or setting suns on them. I posted the reverse of the Illinois half above, but the Oregon reverse has a massive setting sun as well.

I think you should actually take a highlighter pen and mark all of your coins that have a sunrise. It makes them look really, really nice. :D

    We'll assume there's a sunrise back there
