My ANA auction NEWP finally arrived today - a Morgan dime.

Thought this dime would be a nice match for the 50c J1599 purchased not long ago (2nd picture) - the dime P67DCAM, the 50c piece P67+DCAM, both CAC green.

I love the 1879 patterns - there are some great ones to include the Schoolgirl dollar, the $4 Stellas and the $20 Quintiple Stella. I don't have any plans on trying to do them all - just enjoy buying some eye candy now and then!

(Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

    Tim,
I'll take your word, and PCGS' word, and my knowledge of how well-made these come, but in the TruView, the Deep Cameo effect of the dime is understated(?). The 50c is magnificent. Betcha the 10c is too.... Congrats..... :D

I love that old natural cabinet toning. The color complements the design (which is also exquisite) well.

The problem with proofs like this is you can either illuminate the fields to show color and give an idea of reflectivity and surface quality, or you can make them dark and show that the coin is DCAM. It's the kind of coin that really needs two photos.

Exactly! But if I could only have one it’d be the contrast pic every time…almost a sin to post a glamour shot of a DCAM coin…a terrible, terrible sin…… 😆

I dunno, even with the lighting, I find the DCAM contrast pretty easy to discern. YMMV.

If you want to oooh and aaah over a picture that doesn't show half of what the coin actually is, continue to delude yourselves.

If you want to make a case for sycophantic Kool-aid drinking, rock on with the 50c on top and the truview of the dime..
The lower of the two 50c images is vastly closer in contrast to the coin Tim was lucky enough to get his hands on.
The dime always always comes with dramatic DCAM.
    Look it up ;)

I wasn't oooh'ing or aaah'ing, merely noting that even in the TrueView, it was apparent (to me) that the coin was DCAM. I don't find the photos highlighting contrast superior in every respect to the style in the TV. YMMV.

    TY Andy....

I will let Forum members who may never had held any significant number of DCAM coins across many series in their hand to continue to misinform themselves with TruViews.

Andy, how far off am I on the Cameo properties with which this issue comes? Just curious..

@airplanenut - Jeremy, 99% of the expensive proof buyers/connoisseurs I've encountered over that past 40+ years will prefer the cameo-spotlighting feature to what I think you are calling "depth of fields".

Consider this: the most distinctive feature of a coin designated DCAM is the Cameo. Of what possible worth is a picture that de-emphasizes its subject's "claim to fame"?

You can enjoy your Kool-Aid, but that picture is hemlock.

I’m not sure. The 1879 Morgan quarters and halves are sometimes dramatically B&W cameos, sometimes not. I don’t really remember how dramatic the best of the dimes are, but they’re never as contrasted as the best of their big sisters.

My point about TruView DCAM representation can somewhat anecdotally confirmed by a few very expensive coins where the ball was totally dropped, but I'll retract my statement about the prevalence of DCAM dimes after having checked the Heritage Archives after @MrEureka's clarification.

PCGS and CAC disagree with you on the DCAM part. But there’s deep and then there’s deeeeep….maybe you were feeling stingy that day.

Actually, I’m consistently tighter than PCGS is on the DCAM designation on classic coins. (Not sure about moderns.) But this particular piece fell so short of my standards for DCAM that I noted it in my catalog, something I rarely bother doing. I did like it as a 67 though.
