Slabbed Morgan Silver Dollars - Info Help

USMCUSMC Posts: 329 ✭✭✭✭

I am a newbee to coin collecting, joined PCGS to have
some coins graded that we left to me, and to be able
to ask questions of experienced collectors.

I have an interest in Morgan silver dollars to collect
and leave my granddaughter who has an interest in
collecting coins.

QUESTION:
Has anyone ever gotten Morgans from the company
listed below? They are popping up alot lately.

Are they legit in the grading? If so, what grade would
be equivalent in a PCGS holder ...... (Uncirculated)

Thanks for any help - appreciated

They are a legitimate retail company. They are NOT a grading service. They are in NO WAY equivalent to a PCGS slab.

They do not grade. They do not offer a guarantee of that grade. It is slightly better than buying the coin raw. They are legitimate and so the coin is guaranteed to not be counterfeit, unlike a raw coin from an unknown source. But that is the only guarantee you have.

That is a so called self slab. Since the seller slabs their own coin, it cannot be relied upon as an objective grade. This coin looks like it has luster, but it could be anything from an AU on up, ASSUMING it has no problems we can't see from the photo. People who self slab aren't dummies. You won't be getting a great deal.

Morgans are quite plentiful for most dates. You can choose to collect raw coins for approximately bullion value, or stick with an established Third Party Grader, such as PCGS or NGC. For more valuable dates and grades, stick to PCGS until you have more grading experience. There is a reason they are the market standard.

Hi Al - first of all, thank you for your service. Forever grateful.

Here is a link to most of the 3rd party grading companies on the market. As @moursund said, the two tier one services are PCGS and NGC but as one can see, there are many options in the marketplace:

Can get them for $30-40 on the bay in vf-au. Cheaper elsewhere (BST, IG). What is collectible is up to the collector. I know I loved my XF Morgans when I was a new to collecting.

As already noted, the slab in the OP is not from a grading service. So there is no grade stipulated. Likely the coins are authentic. You must determine whether you want graded coins for your collection, or just authentic coins. If you decide on graded coins, then PCGS or NGC would be the best choices....not to say that good coins are not found in other TPG slabs - they are. If you buy coins such as the one in the OP, will your granddaughter want them graded in the future?? Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Cheers, RickO

But bullion (melt) value is currently approximately $18.40, so even at $30, that would be a 63% premium. I think it's fair to say that that's more than "approximately bullion value".

Apparently, these coin holders are common. I bought this one last Friday at my LCS for $32.

@USMC If you want nice looking uncirculated Morgan dollars many in the MS 63 to 64 range have a reasonable price. I usually stick to the top 3 grading services. PCGS, NGC and ANACS. Many people think ANACS doesn't grade as well as the other 2. I think they do just fine. You can look through a Red Book to get an idea of which years and mintmarks would be within your personal budget. Some Morgans are out of reach for many people. An 1893 S for example, even in the lowest grades costs thousands of dollars. Some good first choices for new Morgan collectors are the early S mint coins. They are cheaper than most and usually can be found with a really nice look to them.
Good luck in whatever you end up buying, but buy certified. There are many Morgan counterfeit coins out there.

This picture might provide the OP with a little perspective on the number of TPG's in the marketplace. I currently have around 80 different providers and I've just scratched the surface:

Thank @jmlanzaf. I need to take some new photos as the collection has grown by about 40% since this shot.

@pointfivezero Curious as to what that Roosevelt dime is bottom row second from the right?? It appears to be not slabbed.

Good eye! That is a David Hall flip. Although not a true slab, it was a highly recommended addition to the collection.

@pointfivezero I can spot a Roosie a mile away LOL. I have a nice roosie set.

Do you have any of the gen 3 Anacs? There is a thread in here somewhere about them and seem to be pretty scarce. I think I still have some if you need one. Find the thread and I have mine pictured there.

I only collect the small soapbox ANACS slabs (Gen 1 or Gen 11, depending on who did the research) with the blue “Official ANA Grading” writing on the label. In fact, I just purchased seven more with Morgan’s in two sets of consecutive serial numbers.

Thanks for the Gen 3 offer!

@pointfivezero Gen 3 is the soapbox Anacs but it seems much rarer than Gen 11 with gold hologram

This was my guide when I first started building my Old Holder collection. It did not mention the Gen 3. I will check it out:
