After a 2 year hiatus due to Covid, there will be a meeting of the Society of Bearded Numismatists at the World's Fair of Money. David Alexander (a first growth member) is receiving a lifetime achievement award from the ANA at the ANA Banquet. At the SOB meeting, Ken Bressett will be inducted as a new member and receive the Rookie of the Year award. They are all a bunch of SOB's. :)

I did not know there was an SOBN..... I have had a beard since 1974, and a numismatist far longer.... However, I have not been a member of Society, ever. Oh well... two out of three is not bad... :D;) Cheers, RickO

So I have to ask... is David's beard his lifetime achievement? ;)

As a bearded numismatist (I’ve never been asked to join a society, but few would dispute my SOB status) I commend the achievements of their collections and facial follicles!

When and where? I have my 1981 “SOB of the Year” award with me and I’m not afraid to use it!!!

    I've had a beard since 1977. And a collector/numismatist since 1961. So I guess, like ricko I qualify.

Some coverage of past SOBN meetings:

2015 ANA World’s Fair of Money: Wednesday, August 12—Barbers and Beards: A Match Made at the ANA
". . . . Another hobby group that could use a few good Barbers is the Society of Bearded Numismatists. The SOBs held a rollicking romp at the World Mint Stage Wednesday afternoon. Everyone got one or more 'bearded coins' from the 1800s or early 1900s as a free souvenir of the meeting. The presentations were entertaining — although they got a bit hairy with biographies of notable, famous, and infamous beards throughout history. Then the eminently bearded David T. Alexander gave fascinating sidebar commentary to a show-and-tell discussion of several Society of Medalists creations. The medals were from the American Numismatic Association archives."

The Society of Bearded Numismatists meeting featured plenty of both.

The Dentuck ANA blog: Wednesday, August 15, 2018
"Meetings of the Society of Bearded Numismatists always inject a note of hijinks and lighthearted camaraderie into the ANA show, mixed with some pretty serious scholarship. 'Sam brings the coolest stuff to look at,' one member told me, talking about ANA Numismatic Educator Sam Gelberd. Famous bearded numismatists give brief lectures, like David Alexander’s talk on the Society of Medalists last year. Unfortunately, I had to miss this year’s meeting, so I hope others who did go can share their thoughts."

The Society of Bearded Numismatists always brings a spirit of jocularity to the World’s Fair of Money—as well as some very cool show-and-tell material. The Society is open to all, whether bearded or smooth-faced. ANA numismatic educator Sam Gelberd (right) is among the society’s well-known bearded numismatists. I've been a coin collector since the late 50's and a bearded collector since 72(have not shaved completely since). Never heard of SOBN. At least I have enjoyed coin collecting. ;)

Maybe if they’d invited me I’d have known to keep it a secret! (I’m pretty sure I used that same logic with my older sister as a kid)

My beard is so thick that after I wash my face, the bar of soap looks like a Chia Pet.
