1971 Proof Nickel Error - Die Damage Or Dropped Letter Or?

hyf88hyf88 Posts: 294 ✭✭✭

Found this nickel while looking through some 1971 proof sets, did a little research online and it is listed in Brian Ribar's files as WDDR-004 with a note about the anomaly. Also found an online discussion on another coin board from way back in 2015 about it as well. Other than that very little information about this. Certainly unusual for sure and looks like damage to the die to me.
Anyone else run across this one before?

I’ve seen that before and I consider it a die gouge or die damage in that area

Thanks Fred! Sure looks like some sort of tool damage or possibly something heavy damaging the die as the line is quite raised.

Its raised so no way its a dropped letter.

    Die issue as noted.

Neat variety and great pictures to show it.

Nice looking variety. Right - raised then something gouged the die.

I like how it is frosted as well. It says something about when this gouge likely occurred.

Great picture @hyf88 ... Allows good visual observation of the anomaly. Cheers, RickO
