Most Highly Prized Collectible Coins

The New York Times crossword puzzle today has the clue "most highly prized collectible coins." And the answer is:
RARES
Wtf? This isn't even a word. They change an adjective into a noun. Not to mention that there are many unique coins that are not "highly prized."

Maybe you can make up a few more words and use them as the basis for your next book
I can't believe the NYT would just make up something that's not true.

"Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value---zero."----Voltaire

There's a pop culture trend in crossword puzzles these days. A lot of liberty is taken with language, even at the NYT. Gone are the staid puzzles of Eugene T. Maleska (and I'm thankful for that).
I'm not a big fan of messing with the language but it's everywhere. So I grin and bear it.
