1936 - A year when Walkers were hammered!

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,749 ✭✭✭✭✭

This series is one of my favorites and out of the later dates, 1936 stands out as a year when the strike quality of the Walkers was at an all time high from all the mints. 1934 was not too far behind either on the strike quality, but it's hard to say the same for the other years. So here are my 3 Walkers from 1936, all grade MS-66 and are very well struck. To those that collect this series, has this been you observation as well?

Yes, 1936 is a standout year which followed a very mushy year.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

    Very nice examples!

I love the design but hate the execution of most examples in the series and that is a large contributing factor to me not owning any. If there is a series that NEEDS a strike designation, it’s this one! Full Thumb. I like my Mercs with Full Bands. Talk about a grading boom for the TPGs! Implementing a strike designation for this series would do it and create a TON of value for those that had full strike examples in their collection. I’d like to see most strike designations to go away and just be replaced with Full Strike. A full head on an SLQ means little when the shield is missing rivets. Just my opinion of course.

Back to your 1936 WLHs, great examples, well done.

Yes. And I believe that to be from very slight die refinement, or perhaps better quality of material used for them.

That indeed was a special year for Walkers. This enormous doubled (actually tripled) die was minted in that year, too-

    Fantastic examples, and photography, Erik!

Yes, I agree, 1936 was a good year for walkers....and before I read the dialogue below the title, I was thinking to myself, hmm, 1934 may have been as good or better than 1936....
I recall dealers showing off their 1934S walkers - "have you ever seen a strike like this on an S mint walker?" Yes, most 34S walkers are like that....

It’s a great series! I’m working on completing it. I appreciate the variation between any given year and/or mint mark.

    I used to possess a 1936 50C DDO,

...not a very strong strike on this one, hand definition-wise.

Some beautiful Walking Liberty Halves in this thread.... @ElmerFusterpuck.. That first one in the OP is fantastic. This is a favorite coin indeed, and I can remember when they were pocket change - and that was a lot of money for a kid to have in his pocket. Cheers, RickO

    Some really nice Walkers.

I buy PCGS Walkers from the wholesaler when set up at Local shows for inventory. Walkers are good sellers and seem cheap vs the currently over priced generic dollars and have lower pops too.

I'll add an honorable mention for 1933, given only S made them. They do tend to be hammered, though.
