Starting a new "mini" collection... Great coin hoards of the USA

MrweaseluvMrweaseluv Posts: 226 ✭✭✭✭✭

Or something to that effect lol... Simply said I want to try to get a coin or 2 from each of the great hoards that have gotten labels... This now puts me up to 3 coins for the set (I have an MS60 walking liberty half from the Binion hoard)
Today I added a seated dime and half dime from the Stack's W 57th hoard/collection... The Saddle Ridge Hoard is next on my list (2 coins presently under bid) What do you guys think... good idea for a mini set? And any suggestions of other hoards that have been given labels would be appreaciated

Interesting idea for a set of coins. Not something I would be interested in attempting, but I am sure many would find the concept alluring. I have never been interested in the provenance of coins - to me, the denomination, mint date, mint tell the story. Cheers, RickO

I don't know that you will find this designated on any labels, but I would want to have a large cent from the Randall hoard, they are pretty easy to attribute by grade and Newcomb number.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

    Wells Fargo (gold)
    S. S. Central America
Virgil Brand (more of a hoard than a collection)
John Ford (more of a hoard than a collection; don't look for U.S. business strikes here)

Hansen? I’ve heard his duplicates can run 4 or 5 deep so he might be considered a hoarder.

Didn’t someone once try to hoard all the proof 1909 Lincoln cents, or something like that?

I think it would be a fun set to put together. Here's a couple.
    Binion
    Omaha Bank Hoard

Strange you mention S.S. Central America... was considering if the nugget i had with that label would fit with the "hoards" theme, I also have an 8 reales from the el Cazadore but that kinda kills the "of the USA" part lol

I would prefer straight graded coins in such a collection. While the label approach is interesting, why not also enhance one’s enjoyment of the coin itself while also helping the ease to sell when that time inevitably comes.

I think that el Cazadore would be considered a shipwreck rather than a hoard.

I can see your point, however, in 40ish years of collecting, I have never "willingly" sold off any coin i purchased.. Traded a few and that was hard enough lol...
