Your theory on what happened to this Buffalo nickel?

My thinking is it was in a fire and the mark on the obverse is another- possibly a silver coin- that was on top of this one causing part of that coin to melt on this host coin.
Any other possibilities?
I just purchased this one as I think it is interesting and looks to have been in a mint state condition before the fire.
I am ready to be proven wrong though!

Looks like solder.
I hope it was really, really cheap.
Under MS60 bid.

I recall reading another thread about posting a coin you are buried in...

Any chance this one was caught in the San Fransisco earthquake and almost burned to a crisp? /s

not a chance as the coin post dates the SF Earthquake

cufflink or button?
I’m thinking it might have been one of these🤔

Or one of these

Under AG3 bid would have been more appropriate.

Still high. Now you have to figure out how to get that gunk off the obverse.
It is a coin I would simply have avoided.
It was either jewelry (i.e. cufflink etc.) or decorative such as a hat band or belt. That solder usually cannot be removed completely. Not worth working on. Cheers, RickO
We need emeraldATV to take some close-up pics so we can properly evaluate that coin.

Maybe it was glued to something? The face looks like it was stuck to something for a while

I wonder if salt water damage would do that to nickel/copper ?
