2001 Buffalo

Picked this up the other day.
I think the mint should go back to some of the older coin designs on circulation coins. Standing Liberty quarters, Walking Liberty Halfs, Mercury dimes, Indian head cents and Buffalo nickels would be nice. Especially if the used some semi precious metal unlike the modern dollar coins they make now.

I remember how hot those were when issued. Fast sellout. Some in Congress even considered proposing a secind issue of them.
Nice pick up , I like those 2001 US mint buffalos.
The other points you made… well it seems like the US has succeeded in the debasement of circulating coins, first with gold in 1933 and then silver in 1965… not sure they would go back now and frankly I’m surprised they haven’t stopped the hemorrhaging of the 1cent coin and turned the nickels to zinc.
The older designs are beautiful, no doubt, but to me it becomes how many times can you reuse a design… winged liberty, what a beaut… well we shouldn’t restrike them in clad cause that would be confusing, let’s do a Gold anniversary edition - fair enough. Wait Congress is authorizing us to make a US coin with a metal we’ve never used before (Palladium), I got it… winged liberty. (Buffalo was a close second)
I don’t know, but it reminds me of the Muscle cars In The 60s - they were beasts and had beautiful lines. Then they kinda became mundane over the next decades (not so unlike the US mint after the walking, standing and winged liberties), only to see a “revival” in muscle cars with similar lines to cars produced 50 years ago. To quote a friend “what was old is new again “
I see the struggle with the new designs , the innovative series , but hopefully with change comes progress - I mean it took the corvette 8 times be where it is , which is a class above all your muscle car restrikes at present.
It's all about what the people want...
@LukeMarshall don't give them any ideas for removing nickel from the nickles.

All they are missing is the “.999 Fine Silver” and “One Troy Oz.”.
Might be a good idea to issue some updated face values, too. Cents thru quarters can't buy much today. Issue 50c, $1, $2.50, $5, and maybe even $10. I like the "classic" designs mentioned, too.
@koynekwest OOOOH The incused Indian design would be awesome to bring back.

Agreed!
I used to have one a few years back. Needed money so had to sell it. Wanna get another one of these days. Nice pickup!

As far as reproducing the original Buffalo nickel I like the Buffalo gold much better. The reverse effigy is much better IMO. Of course, they do cost a little more than the commem.
I have handled some always a high demand coin.
Agree, just no more Barbers please!

I had one years ago and commissioned an artist to modify a little.

No worries though, made a nice profit when I sold.

Bought this from dpoole, a forum member on the BST.
Great "Hobo Dollar".
When I see stuff like this I am reminded that there is often a market for impaired coins.
Imagine if your dollar coin had milk spots or other issues. No big deal when the surface is going to be carved.

That is awesome Mel!! Who did you have do that for you? And you sold it?
Wish I knew about it.

Stef, that is Saburov's work. One of, if not the best. IIRC, it brought more than 1800 on ebay when I sold.
YOWSERS!! Well, I wouldn’t have gone that high as I’m a cheapskate but that has got to be one of the
most fantastic work I’ve seen.
