I've seen a lot of 1893 Columbian Expo medals by Augustus St. Gaudens.

The vast majority are not gilt, but this looks like an exceptional one!

Do we know if the gilt was done as issued, or afterwards?

If it were plated after striking, it wouldn’t show the luster like it does - it would be even and more shiny and mirrored.

That is a very nice medal... I have not seen that one before. Certainly looks like it is 'as issued'. Cheers, RickO

St. Gaudens only designed the obverse---his design for the reverse, featuring a nude male athlete, was rejected. Barber did the reverse.
