Olympics and Chess Championship in 2021 (2020)🥇
briefly looked for an existing thread but didn't see anything and i'm not going to let the fact that i live in a world where no olympic emoji exists ruin this post or my day.
Post a coin, medal, token currency or any numismatic item to convey your joy and support of the athletes dedication and talent(s)/gift(s).
i'm a fan of the 800,1500, 3000 and 5000 meter normal, hurdle and/or steeple chase mostly women as i really like their comradare. but a few of the men's track n field as well.
also VERY much looking forward to Carlsen vs Nepomniachtchi (nepo) world chess championship in november.
we can really set this thing on fire if there are any nobel activities going on!

Amazing that you spelled Nepomniachtchi correctly, but blew Carlsen!
Sorry, I don't own any sports-related coins anymore...
Your post made me wonder if there are any chess related coins? For years I was heavily into chess...then a couple of relocations and I lost contact with other players.... Have played some high level chess years ago... A great game indeed. Cheers, RickO
I have no idea what Nepo and Carlsen have to do with coins, except that Karpov is a world-class stamp collector, which might be obliquely related to numismatics.
We had a presentation on Chess & Coins at the last Newman Portal Symposium: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/598053.

hey, that is nice. i've been in many a shop when parents, grandparents, athletes, etc have looked for coin-related sports memorbilia and the like. sometimes spending some hefty $$$ and doing engravings.

Up through the 1948 London Olympics, there were actually Olympic events in engraving and other arts.
The last winner of the Olympics engraving gold medal was Albert Decaris, who also engraved the plates for postage stamps such as this signed artist proof:

Is there any way to watch this without being there? Remember when chess events were televised? That would be great. And USA Today used to print the games in the sports section as they happened. Is there someplace on line to keep track of these games?
There are many chess medals and coins. I saw the presentation on chess and how you might collect chess related coins. It was an interesting presentation and is taped if anyone is interested. The winner of the upcoming match may have a coin to honor him one day - who knows.
There are definitely websites where the games are streamed live, some with video of grandmasters doing instant analysis. The one I used to follow the last World Championship match also displayed computer assessments of the strength of various probable next moves, which is fun. All of this was/is free. There was no video of the players themselves, although that may also be available (somewhere) for a fee. I don't really need to watch the players during the match.
Can't remember the name of the site I used, but will look into it later. You can probably find it with Google, etc.
i'm confident there will be several if not numerous live streams across many of the official chess sites, youtube, twitch, etc.

I don't recall if I still have any Olympic pieces. At one time I had many of the cancelled dies from the 1996 Atlanta games plus a coin as well. Those are long gone as they helped fund a vacation home. In the meantime, I got these two pieces as part of a package deal, I had no idea what they were. So I put them out on my table at shows in hopes someone could identify what they were. No luck for years and years. The diameter is 1.75" and the are 3/8" thick. Made from base metals, not plated.
I'll post the answer and how I found it if there are some comments to do so.

I'm not an Olympic athlete, but I have fenced a couple. Most recently, I had one in a pool bout less than two weeks ago at the United States Fencing Association National Championships in Philadelphia. He beat me 5-2, but I thought the bout was fairly competitive. Here are a couple medals I picked up over the years that feature fencing (though they are not Olympic medals) and that are quite well done-

I think Carlsen is probably a 60/40 favorite, but The Nepo Man has a chance!

now you make me think. i wonder which i will enjoy more, the matches or the after-match commentary from the 10,000+ videos plus that will be popping up?!?!?
i do like carlsen though. for his age, to go through what he has with all the success and fame and really hasn't done anything too terrible, i'm rooting for him to hold it down but if nepo takes it, that will be refreshing for the game and all those that play. even if carlsen loses, he will still be a crusher of the game for many years to come.
one of the things that never impressed me about fischer, is that he wasn't able to hold it together. i love an enormous amount of his matches but i really prefer those that can stick around for years/decades and adapt. granted he played in a MUCH more tumultuous time for chess and he did a lot of good for the game and those that play it.
i'll stop here cuz i can go on for a long time with chess commentary!

nice!
surely the russian fed at LEAST has some comems for chess. c'mon already.
there are a dozen other big chess countries that should have some as well. heck norway shoulda made a comem JUST for carlsen. probably only the best chess player that has ever lived. one could argue that he has much more at his disposal which is true but it is also true, so does everyone else, so the competition is MUCH stiffer.

My kids are primarily soccer players but i introduced them to competitive swimming a few years ago so as to keep them active and fit through the colder months.
I used to be the pretty voice that says "Take your mark" before sounding the beep as a USA swim official. My oldest son has a few high school records to his name and he was always in total awe of Kieran Smith who is two years senior to him and used to blow the competition out the water at local meets. Following coin pics are not my own but just wanted to share them in keeping with the thread theme.
Cheers.

Magnus has 2 wins now, plus 6 draws.
It will be very difficult for Nepo to come back from here.
Understatement of the century! Once Nepo lost the longest game ever played in a championship match, he was under a lot of pressure to equalize, and he was also exhausted, as was Carlsen. The second loss can be attributed to sloppy play on Nepo's part after blundering away a pawn.
IT IS DONE!
gratz to MC for holding it down for years to come.
SO many challengers and yet, Ian was the one, so a big congratz to him to fighting the world champ and holding on as long as he did.
what can ya say? carlsen is just well, carlsen!

Down goes Nepo!!
He missed some chances in the early games, and after he lost the longest game ever played in a WC match, he clearly couldn't handle the pressure. Worst blowout in the WC since Capablanca beat Lasker in 1921!
And to keep it coin related...
it was intended to be a coin thread with chess/olympic themes BUT i kinda buried it in retrospect.
is that overstruck on a canada cent or token? tons of character either way.

I wonder if he'll be able to credibly stick to his vow to only play Firouzja if Firouzja holds on to last place.
GM Ian Nepomniachtchi won the 2022 Candidates Tournament with one round to spare, repeating his impressive feat from the last Candidates. Nepomniachtchi will now face GM Magnus Carlsen in the 2023 FIDE World Championship match.
GM Ding Liren finished the tournament in second place and will face Nepomniachtchi for the title of world champion in case Carlsen forfeits his title.

while off-topic, hope for a little tolerance since it is in the same thread.
watching a video of Levy being interviewed about Carlsen's virtually unmatched chess skills I heard that Nepo and Carlsen will be going at it AGAIN for the championship. WOW - video for anyone interested.
SO, will Carlsen choose to defend? He made a strong statement about NOT doing so if he felt the challenge wouldn't be there so while he will be defending against arguably the strongest candidate, it is the SAME person as last time, which arguable, was not a very good performance. Will be interesting to see where it goes!
but since i am more off-topic than not, here are my offerings for on-topic (kinda since this IS the US forum, but we don't seem to have much obvious Chess-related numismatic material, readily available at-hand)

ok. i didn't watch the whole video before posting above. Carlsen bowed out of the championship!
Nepo vs Liren
now my mind will be blown...
i had wondered if he did bow out, if that automatically made Nepo Champion by default but it seems they have a system/rules in place for such an event.
