Percentage of N6 MINSIZRQ in Bulk Submissions? Averaging 10%

RufussCkingstonRufussCkingston Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭✭✭

Never really seen it discussed except for single submissions of expensive cards , but what have peeps been seeing in terms of the number of MinSize rejects in Bulk Value submissions that are making their way back after 9+ months in captivity!

Just got a few back, all Modern (not Ultra) subs, averaging 10%+ min size. Had one that was 20%. Seems that 1981 Kareems and Classic Shaq's are persona non gratta ;) Did get a few actually slabbed though. Was pretty random on the other cards I got back. I guess even miscuts that are larger are considered minsize too.

When you think about it, some of the cards that I got min sized probably wouldn't even be worth $10-20$ if not a PSA 10. So if cheap cards are getting flagged, I'm really surprised that expensive stuff could pass on 2nd, 3rd+ attempts.

Or maybe the value subs are going to newish graders and they are being overzealous trying to prove their skill and flagging everything right and left. Where as the expensive cards are going to the veterans with nothing to prove but consistency..... to a point.

I just got approximately 20% N6’s back on a 225 card order. About 45 cards in total not graded, which is totally nuts. I had 10 of 13 1969 Chamberlain’s alone come back N6. I also had all 5 1961 Fleer Elgin Baylor’s come back N6. This was multiples more N6’s than I’ve ever had in an order. Usually, it’s like 2 or 3 per 100.

On a related note, PSA should really just stop grading 61 Fleer basketball altogether as they reject more than not for minsize. At the core of the problem, they need to develop a way to tell what is actually trimmed and stop using minsize as a cheat because they have no idea if a card is cut small or trimmed. If you have resubbed enough cards, it’s very clear PSA has no idea what’s been trimmed. I’ve had the same card come back minsize, then trimmed, then graded.

It’s basically “this card doesn’t meet the size requirement parameters for the set”; it could be too big (guessing 5%) or too small (guessing 95%).

However, it’s not calling the card trimmed, either. Open an older pack of cards and put the bottom edge on a flat surface and you’ll see some variation in size. Some is allowable but the ‘bad guys’ can see the potential for card alteration. Done professionally it’s tough to spot, too.

The best thing about N6 is you aren’t charged for the card.

As the curious type, how many of these cards coming back were pack pulled vs purchased as a single?

I would think that information has some significant value.

Just grade the card. if they think it's trimmed say so, if not, grade it. Everytime I get one, the card is in superior condition for it's year. I sent in a common 1962 topps card once that looked like a 9. Got N6 on it. Never is the card going to be a psa 6 or lower, they always look like 9's or 10's.

For those who happen to have some N6 cards, would it be possible to put them in an industry standard type card holder with recessed area for the card. Example - UltraPro OneTouch Magnetic holder. And post a picture showing how it fits inside that recessed area -- I just want to see how the N6 card fits within the recessed area. See how much space between the card edges and the borders of the recess.

That’s because a lot of the older cards that are undersized originate from vending.

Ummm.... Not sure that's a percise way of measuring.

But basically I can tell you that all of my min size cards are 1/128-1/64 of an inch short, except for the few that are too large.

I would say 60-70% of mine were ebay buys..... But who's chopping Classic Shaq's?? I mean most of my N6 cards were only purchased for a few bucks, no one is trimming for an extra dollar!

I ripped a ton of 77/78 OPC years back and 20% came back N6. Frustrating. How about some leeway for cards under $100. There can’t be a large scale trimming problem on low-medium priced cards….
