eBay Sales Tax collection on Florida coin purchases?

JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,295 ✭✭✭✭✭

I purchased a couple of Barber Quarters on eBay yesterday. At checkout I was charged sales tax- a first for me. Both sellers were from out of state; neither of them were trying to collect the tax. Florida has a Statute that specifically exempts US coin (legal tender) purchases from Sales Tax collection. What's up? Is anyone else running into this? How do I get this fixed and stop the tyranny?

I love them Barber Halves.....

One would think eBay would do a little legal research before enacting a new policy like this. I'm guessing they'll be getting a LOT of phone calls.....

They already have. See the other thread.

Florida's law is odd. They don't tax "legal tender" coins but they do tax bullion under $500. That's virtually the reverse of most states.

Sounds like a real mess out there....NYS charges sales tax on coins... I try to restrict my purchases to private deals OOS. Not always successful. Probably one reason there are no coin shows around here. Cheers, RickO

Right now I believe it's broken and only exempting over $500 purchases. They should refund your sales tax if you contact customer service. Never hurts to forward on the complaint as well, probably more complaints they get the faster they will fix it.

An aside, but I think this is one reason that supreme court decision was a little ridiculous. If eBay can't get even get sales tax collection right, how are small businesses supposed to? The thresholds per state are fairly low imo.

Getting the refund is not as hard as actually getting a live ebay drone that has any idea of what you are talking about. It's always the "i'm gonna kick this up the ladder to the correct department" answer.

Ebay knows it. It's getting the code to work. I called them and they were aware of the problem.

Are they refunding the sales tax they've incorrectly collected? This is getting ridiculous.

FL also just raised the state income tax from zero to zero. ;)

FL is tax friendly. We let tourists pay our taxes. Come on down (but don't stay).

To continue the point: and the assessed value on my home for Real Estate taxes is prohibited from being raised more than 2.5% a year, even though the median home price in Palm Beach County is currently 35% higher than one year ago. Oh, I also forgot to add that in the winter we don’t have to shovel sunshine, lol.

A day without fine wine and working on your coin collection is like a day without sunshine!!!
