This guy almost slipped past me. I don't think it's damage. Looks like some type of struck thru. The W "almost" took a direct hit.

Does appear to be struck through something. Nice find!

Grease does tend to accumulate on dies and the heat from the strikes make it very hard, then loosens and falls onto the planchet (like dropped letters) - so maybe that scenario........?

When roll searching BNIB OBW dollars I came across a few with the “grease” still on it.
It was a medium gray paste, thicker than toothpaste. The strike through pattern was a splat pattern
You have a picture of them?
no.
this is not a good picture but they were a radial movement of the "grease"

way back when, people were finding edge lettering problems with die polishing problems and strike through problems all on the same coin. they were called triple errors on ebay. the strike throughs of that ilk and time were called starburst errors, as mentioned in the article.
I see some images now that are turning up under starburst errors that are not strike throughs but are radial flow lines from over worked dies. I have also found these on dollar coins. Interestingly enough, on the reverse the flow lines between the arm and head up near the rim are not radial but flow through the gap.
Good eye!

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.I was thinking struck through until the last picture.... and if that were the only picture, I would think damage. Now I am not sure which is the correct answer. Cheers, RickO
Had the same problem here. I had to do a double take. It was difficult getting the light, focus and angle right for the pictures.
@MsMorrisine- I can see what you're talking about.
Here's another one..
that’s it!
Really? Acetoned it away? That 84-P Kennedy isn't coming off.
Edited
That was from a previous post that somehow saved in draft
Okay.
Okay, I'm lost.
No and I acetone sit away - spurious. Left over from a previous non-post that was saved as a draft
“That’s it!” - that is the look. The strike through just sprays out plus the surfaces aren’t smooth. It looks rough and however big, that rough look just isn’t eye appealing to me
Oh okay, got it. Thanks for the feedback!
BTW: I found it roll researching. I keep it as an example.
