Possible 2017 p ddo penny?

Aight, I know I ain't an expert on error coins (heck, I'm 0 for 2 on making posts trying to confirm error coins) but anyways, found this 2017 p today and under the magnifying glass the letters in 'liberty' look a little thicker than usual.

As you can see (hopefully better at least) in the second picture I noticed slight notching at the bottom right of the letters 'TY' and possibly even a bit on the 'R'. I also noticed what could be extra thickness on the letters 'BER' as well. Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm stupid, maybe both. What do you guys think?

Machine doubling IMO. Most true double dies I have seen you can see two or more distinct points at the tips of the letters. This coin appears to have moved slightly and stamped a second time.

Possibly. But even if it is, it's so minor as not to merit any attention.

I would classify it as machine doubling.... However, as @MarkKelley said, if it is a DD, it is super, extremely minor.... You could send it to an expert for further evaluation - each coin is a learning experience. Good luck, Cheers, RickO

Yeah. A DD that minor probably won't be worth grading anytime soon (that is, assuming it is one). I'll probably end up holding on to it as a cool find. However, I will potentially grade it eventually.

Also remember that TPGs only attribute doubled dies that are significant (1955, 1969S, 1972, etc) or are listed in the cherry pickers guide. They will grade the coin but no doubled die designation will be on the label. Even assuming it's a minor class IX doubling, it probably wont make the CPG

On the VV 2017-P DDO the best way to tell is the thickness on the date. Especially on the body of the 7 and the 2. The other 2017-P DDO that Wexlers has listed has a slight doubling on the earlobe.

Haven't checked that as extensively yet, but I belive I recall the date being a bit wide as well. Since I'm currently at a campfire, I'll post my findings in an hour or so.

Yeah. I'll either have to wait until it gets on the cherry pickers guide, or (the more likely option) I'll just label it as whatever ddo I find out it matches up with and add it to my collection. Besides, I got college coming up soon. I ain't grading coins unless I find something pretty special. Gotta save my money yk?

Cool deal - I'de enjoy the campfire all night and worry about the coin tomorrow! B)

  • Ok. I checked the coin. There is a little bit of thickness towards the bottom of the 2, and defiantly a bit more on the bottom of the 7. The pics are kinda hard to go off of since they're from slightly different angles, so take this as you will.

I'd say no type of doubling

Yeah, not seeing it - looks more like circulation flattening!

  • Yeah could be. I'll prolly put up one more little push to see if I can match it to any known ddo and if I find nothing I'll just toss it back.
