California Gold

I don't know if it is real or a reproduction piece. Any opinions as to real or not and as to any value? The copper looking spots look like some kind of glue on top of the token. I am hesitant to try and clean it off. Cleaning is bad for the hobby.

    Souvenir token, not a coin

@jmlanzaf any idea if it has any value. I know some of the old reproductions do.

They are usual 10k to 14k gold. I don't know that market well enough.

Not the genuine article. No denomination is the main tell. It may have some low karat gold content but the value is minimal.

is this the type that usually has a bear on the rev and if it does makes it more likely to be legit or is the bear a bad sign. been a while since i've verified and simply cannot recall. t.i.a.

@Hydrant I got it many years ago for around $20. It looks like gold in hand. My pics are a bit dark. Its very tiny about 1/4 of an inch in diameter.

If you don't have an acid test kit take it to a jewelry shop. They can check and access the gold content in two minutes.

If you see a bear, BEWARE!!!
All of the California small denomination gold coins are listed in the PCGS Coin Facts web site by BG number and includes pics and other information for each type. If your coin doesn't match one of the pics on this web site, it's either a token or a more modern fantasy coin. None of the original coins showed a bear.

Just one of the old tokens... could have some gold content - take it to a jeweler for evaluation. Cheers, RickO

So this is one time that if you see a bear you should run away as fast as you can.
