2 super wild toners

Picked up a couple of RAW 8 Reales in early May that looked like a couple of pretty lustrous and colorful AU's from the images.
Seller's photos:
Neat, eh?
But wait... what's this?
April HA sale:
Can it be....
Yup. Sure can:
Luckily the seller agreed to a full refund. Stay vigilant out there!

Well crap. That is disappointing. Is it a seller any of us might run across?
He's an active seller on FB of mainly US material. I do believe him when he says that he didn't know anything about this and there's nothing to indicate foul play in any of his other auctions.

Just curious, what prompted you to review the historical HA auctions? How did you know to look?
An acquaintance on IG pointed me towards one of them and finding the second one took no time at all.
Also, while the 1778 has a chance to get past graders as MA in terms color, the hairlines would probably still keep it as AU Details. 1788 will not get past the graders like that, imo.
Toning was likely done by introducing Sulphur as a gas while the coins were still in paper envelopes resting obverse down, which is why you don't see color crossing the devices (envelope was in contact with the high points).

Great detective work
Why do you the think the seller took back the coins for a full refund to you after so much time after you had received them ?
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
Thanks for the insight! Appreciated!
The coins were actually stuck in Canadian customs for about 3 weeks. I sent the seller a note about my findings only a few days after receiving the package.

From the look of his fingers and fingernails, he just got done working on them (or polishing his shoes).
That's a shame...

Good work. Good enough that you got called a "stupid buyer" in the open forum refuse - I mean refuge.

That place is losing its edge, it seems.

1788 is now on eBay. No mention of anything related to the previous condition.

Disappointing for sure. Getting some good bids already.

Seems to be gone...
Perhaps he got tipped off to this post, but in any case, I'm glad it's taken down.
