Is my 1922 Peace Dollar artificially toned?

RubiconRubicon Posts: 201 ✭✭✭

My coin has strong gold color with no variance in the toning. Smooth gold look with bright luster. Look is almost too perfect. Concerned after reading this article which I will post. Please advise toning experts.

Why did you start another thread about the same coin?

As many posters stated in your other thread, it doesn’t look nearly as unusual as you seem to think. And the color isn’t the least bit suspicious.

I've seen many a Peace Dollar with a light overall goldish toning - natural BUT you still overpaid for it! :#

    I read 4. Research
With grading companies like PCGS and NGC imaging more and more of their coins and even keeping auction records of past sales, it is highly advisable to look up the certification number on a coin you may be considering even though the coin may be graded (AT coins do get by the grading companies sometimes, especially the very deceptive examples). Not only do most AT coins continue to tone once they are already in a holder because the toning was created through unstable methods, but coin doctors are now able to gas coins already in certified holders and toned them in that way. This is especially true of older slabs, which tend to be even less air-proof than more modern versions. Simply looking up the certification number of a coin and/or searching auction archives on Heritage Auctions or Great Collections for the coin can reveal a lot

None of that has anything to do with your coin, about which you’ve already received numerous opinions.

Thanks Mark. I have never seen this type of gold toning before so I was suspicious. Also saw these photos.

Yes, you mentioned numerous times in your other thread that you hadn’t seen that type of toning before. And many posters told you it wasn’t out of the ordinary.

Okay. Got paranoid after seeing this article and the photos attached. Sorry.
How do the coin doctors get into the slab. Is it a laser? Does anybody really know how it’s done

    No it is not.

Gold toning is how most peace dollars tone unless influenced one way or another.

  • Definitely not AT. Don't worry friend. If you have questions on other coins in the future though doesn't hurt to ask. This type of toning is very natural though. You have a lovely coin

On people intentionally toning coins in the holders, this is very uncommon and they have a pretty distinct look. Unfortunately not everyone is aware but I'm pretty confident most on this board including OP would recognize it when they see it.

Thank you for your nice response and encouragement. Coin looks much nicer in hand than photo represents.

@Rubicon .... A tarnishing agent (gaseous) can be introduce to a slab by drilling a tiny hole in the seam, gassing it, then resealing. Simple process... a vacuum jar can also be used, but not as simple. Cheers, RickO

  • @Rubicon The holders are sonically sealed but they are not completely airtight. So it is possible to gas them but done intentionally like that it's probably pretty much a brute force method and leaves a very distinct look, at least based on every one I've ever seen. It's definitely very uncommon though but something to keep an eye out for

This is closer to the eye appeal than my photos Mr. Feld. That’s why I bought it and paid a higher price. Photo I am reposting is a little embellished by the site but not overly.
