Anyone know the whereabouts of the PCGS MS69 1793 Wreath Cent?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,121 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know the owner of "THE MINT" used to own it along with several other breathtaking rarities, yet I have not heard of this single finest example MS69 cent (let alone being the first, a 1793 Wreath) in quite a while.

I am curious if it had been sold and where it is.
I checked a couple of Registries without any luck.

It is absolutely insane to me that a copper coin minted in 1793 could survive in MS-69.

Not knocking the coin, would love to own one like that, but that coin was not graded, it was ranked at the time of certification.

fwiw, unless someone photoshopped it, there are images of it in an TPG holder. (ogh?) i probably have the image somewhere down deep in my archives.

TDN, isn't that the coin that you purchased from Parrino on the golf course?

I recall one of the Mint's famed MS67-69 cents grew spots as it was the talk of a ANA show.

Going back about a decade as SeaEagleCoins Larry (RIP) was still alive and standing next to me when that gossip crossed the browse floor.

This cert is currently featured in one or more sets.

When you look it up, you can see it is in the registry (but the set is closed). If I was guessing, I would think "High Desert"

What an amazing coin.... Always dream of finding one of these while MD'ing - though certainly not in MS69. My area has the history to make it a possible find. Cheers, RickO

I believe Stacks Bowers sold it in 2013 in the same sale that TDN bought his 1794 dollar. It was resold again via auction later that year, but I don't recall who purchased it. I do know where the 1793 Wreath Cent in PCGS SPECIMEN 68 RD is....unbelievable coin I must say.

Sold for $558,125.00 in 2013. I think the owner will see a nice profit if he or she sells today. Phenomenal coin.

Copper is not hot right now and the coin has a bit of a stigma because nobody truly believes the grade on the holder. So I tend to disagree with your assertion.

You don’t need to guess. PCGS auction history confirms the coin is currently owned by Mike Chipman, aka High Desert. He has an amazing EAC collection. It appear he was able to get it for a bargain, $481,750 (If he purchased in Stacks second 2013 sale). Current PCGS Price Guide Value, $650,000.

Beautiful examples of this coin. Would the 66 be an earlier strike using the same dies with the 68 and 69 later strikes with die cracks?

not in this case. while the mint has used proof dies for business strikes on many occasions, you can see just the date area is enough to show that the die from this SP is not used for either of the other 2 business strikes i posted. i'm not saying that SP die didn't strike any business strikes, just not these 2.
