Unless it is price the same as an ASE in a flip I would pass. The coin is ungraded and the WTC adds no value.

    depends upon the price.

Actually on eBay they are selling regularly in the $150-$200 range. I have one somewhere but I got it close to raw ASE value as you mention, the whole subject of certifying these is obviously touchy, but it is a significant part of American history. Semper Fi!

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????

I’m paying about $140 one just sold 2 days ago for $240 on eBay

Unless you wanted to buy the gold eagle, the one you pictured is about as good as it gets, with the 2001 date.

Some years ago I went cheap and picked up a WTC Peruvian silver coin, but the 2001 SE is one I might look for some day.

Just keep the plastic in good shape as I don't think they will reslab with the special label.

The ones for over $200 either went to a sucker or they had a real grade.

If you want it for $140 and it’s legit then that’s less than eBay sales.

My memory is that when these first appeared on the market, a lot of people felt like they were in poor taste due to the happenings of that day. Within a year or so they seemed to become more accepted.

This is untrue. The WTC adds no value for you. The market feels differently.

    This....

It's been almost 20 years & those slabs along with value, "have stood the test of time."
Disclaimer...I do not collect ASE"s nor do I own any at this time.

@Matthew21 Who provides the provenance? Certified # recovered at ground zero? I get the impression that they can't grade due to event damage? If you know. Peace Roy

Its graded by pcgs gem unc I mean they could have said it came from there but didn’t . But I would doubt that during that time what all that happened they would fake it. Its been out for years and they are going for good money on eBay so I would think by now somebody would have found out something.

Some were graded numerically but many/most just got a grade like yours. The value is in the provenance, not the grade, so it was not worth the extra cost to split hairs on a number.

They are from a known stash that was in a vault in the basement of the WTC. As I recall, it was a few months before they could dig it out.

    The COMEX vault, wasn't it?

I've seen multiple fakes in the wtc holders in eBay too. One just like this, but was a 2012, I contacted the seller and told them that a 2012 coin wasnt recovered in the September 2001 rubble. They blocked me. Another I saw was one of the PCGS graded ones with this label, but when I checked the cert number it was for a totally different coin. While I was interested in buying one for the history, I'm cautious now because I have seen the fakes.

These I have seen don’t have certification numbers some might do but the ones I’ve seen don’t.

I bought one of these many years ago from a reputable dealer. It was a short while after they were discovered. It was presented very nicely in a book about 9/11 and the WTC. While perhaps not my greatest numismatic purchase, I treasure it as an historical memento of that tragic event.

Here are done pictures of the grades ones.

Since you can buy fake pcgs holders and print fake labels, I would feel more comfortable personally buying a graded one with a cert number.

My understanding is that collectors universe bought a lot and started selling them in the PCGS holders, but they were never handled by PCGS directly. The ones graded and labeled PCGS were actually graded by PCGS and not sold by CU. These two in the example have valid cert numbers at PCGS.

That's interesting, I didn't know about the COMEX vault. Looked it up, roughly 30,000,000 ounces of silver recovered. And besides the Comex vault, the Bank of Nova Scotia had silver n' gold stored under the towers. Many in the form of bars...
Two questions...are there any gold WTC slabbed coins and why wouldn't any recovered coins have older dates as well, the vault couldn't possibly be storing only new ones...could they? That would be like recovering silver from a shipwreck and only slabbing the recovered coins from the year the ship sunk.

Yes, I've seen Gold Eagles slabbed, for example.

Also, many of the SEs were older - the OP's coin is 2001 which makes it the most desirable,

My own WTC coin is a Paraguayan siver coin - not sure of the date but it is decades older - which was being held there as bullion along with SEs, GEs, other bullion coins, and bars.

I just got the coin today kind of milk spotted a little bit but it has pcgs on the back and not collector’s universe. I seen a lot fewer of those for sale.

I think the world trade dose add a little premium. The coin was in the vaults at the time of the attack and collapse of the WTC. It’s a actual peace of history from 9/11.

  • JBKJBK Posts: 16,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

The seller didn't disclose the milk spots? :/

Unfortunate, but milk spots on SEs are not uncommon, but the special provenance is, so it's not the end of the world.

No he didn’t but I could have not gotten it if I didn’t want it he is a local seller of mine.

The price was right, and it is the most desirable date....
