Does it matter for low grade common coins? I don't think the value changes much, if at all, for lower grade coins, especially Barbers because there are a lot of Barber coins in low grades. The top one is closing in on being a cull, if not there already.
Cleaned and cleaned.... does not really affect the overall situation in either case... Low grade due to wear, scratches, dings, rim damage.... Cheers, RickO
The second one might get by now, but I agree with @MFeld, it has been cleaned at one time. They didn't look bad to my old eyes at the auction but when I got my loop on them, Oh Well, I got my answer back, they will not accept any returns. I didn't give but $25 for the pair. (Thought someone would overbid me)

Maybe, but Barber half stars seem to collect dirt/toning. Miss Liberty is a bit unusually pale and untoned, but she does have the usual dark ear and eye. I’m not sure that the toning in the protected areas is a smoking gun, but if I were buying the coin on ebay, I’d want a second photo.
By the way, if it is not cleaned, I think it would grade G06 and is nicer than many with that level of circulation, in spite of the rim bump.

In spite of the large number of coins, it’s actually pretty hard to find “choice” circulated coins. Percentage wise, there’s a big difference in price between a beat up G04/06 and a choice VG08. For common dates, the former will go for about melt, and the VG08 about double.

1st one definitely
2nd one probably, but more acceptable
The first one looks cleaned to me but the second one looks ok.

The 1st has been harshly cleaned. I’d have to see the 2nd up close.

Same here ... first one looks cleaned ... second one looks good.
To my eyes, yes and yes (though not to the same extent in the case of the second one).

I thought so, the 1909 O is not as bad but looks cleaned to these old eyes. (second one) The first one looks harshly cleaned.
Unless there are hairlines or unexpectedly bright surfaces that are not showing up in the photo, the second coin looks ok.
The second one looks good, but it has some rim nicks.
In agreement with those above, first one cleaned, second looks okay.
To those who say the second coin hasn't been cleaned, look at how much darker the surfaces tend to be in most of the protected areas.

It doesn't matter on either when you consider the damage and grade level.

The second coin has a rim ding that would make it a definite no to me. The first one is silver value only in my mind.

The rim ding doesn't bother me as much as the crater below the O + L in Dollar on the reverse!
Hadn't even seen the crater, will have to get out the coin to make sure it's as big as it looks.🙂
Cleanings aside, the scratches and rim issues are just as evident if not more so...

The crater isn't as bad with a 14x loupe. It's there tho! 🙂
In my opinion rim nicks can happen in normal circulation where as that crater is more than likely intentional.
