    Too much!

    Run Forrest, run!

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Lol that’s great. I actually just found it sold on heritage auctions for $144 but it came with a 1808 large cent vg details corroded anacs graded, so I figured it was kind of high.

Too much. Less than $50 in that shape.

That except is the reason it’s not a nice looking coin.

It’s like a real estate agent saying that’s a nice looking house except it burned to the ground.

If they were that cheap I would buy them all day and resale them good luck finding any thing in this condition for $50 might take years. All the ones on eBay that sold in that range look like junk.

Tough date. Shame about the scratches, because otherwise the planchet is decent. The uneven wear pattern is also a little suspicious, like it’s slightly bent or some other damage occurred in addition to the scratches.

Not for me. Save your money and get a more desirable coin, you will be glad you did. Damaged coins are hard to sell for a profit.

I know it’s overpriced but what would you think would be a fair price. Thanks

It’s a coin I really don’t want at any price, but of course I can afford to be pickier, as my budget allows it.

Be patient when shopping for the classic head cents. So many have issues. Save up, and pay up, for the nicer ones. Dates like the 1809 and 1811 are always in demand, provided that they are in reasonably decent condition. You’ll appreciate them more, and readily recoup your cost, when it comes time to sell.

1811 is a tougher date in the series, but at $100?? IDK... I still think they'd have to pay me more to take that coin ;-)

Seriously though, I've been looking at Classic Head LCs for well over a year and the good ones do come out every once in a while... or at least the pieces with a bit more subtle problems.

Now if that coin was a 1799, with a strong date, no corrosion, and “just” those scratches, I would be a bidder. But that’s a coin with a strong market in nearly any condition, like a ‘93 Liberty cap or a chain cent. But those are the exceptions.
I don’t adhere to the “don’t buy problem coins” dogma when it comes to early pre 1816 copper, but don’t buy coins with significant problems, when better ones are available at reasonable prices.

The ‘94 large cent you posted was a good example. A coin with decent detail and eye appeal at a reasonable price. A nicer one would have cost you a grand, maybe more, and a dog would have still cost you $250. That coin at that price is the kind of compromise to be applying.

I would not buy that coin.... not at $10....It is, and always will be, a problem afflicted, undesirable coin. Cheers, RickO
