Gerritt Cole has now struck out 56 batters since his last walk.
Let that sink in.
That streak is tied, with Curt Schilling, for the most consecutive punchouts without a free pass since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893.

TB is a weak hitting team
But Cole just powered by them with ease.

Cole is one of the small stable of true Aces. dominant pitcher
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I remember that run by Schilling, too, and it’s pretty special. To be able to be pitching that much in the zone and still be that unhittable.

And now in second place. . .
It's actually not the record. The record was just set earlier this week. Corbin Burnes hit 58 before walking somebody on Thursday.
It was the record at the time of posting; and it could grow - for either - if they haven’t walked anyone.
Pretty impressive by both players to pound the zone and be unhittable anyway.
Burnes has been spectacular; they need to hit for the kid!

Never heard of him. Until now.
Burnes gave up a walk after 58. Still the record to start a season.

Yankees' Gerrit Cole three strikeouts away from breaking this unique record held by Corbin Burnes
Gerrit Cole is three strikeouts away from securing a record that had been held by Curt Schilling for nearly 20 years -- up until Thursday.
As of his 12 strikeout and zero walk performance on Wednesday, Cole has struck out 56 batters since his last walk -- which tied Schilling's single season mark from 2002.
But just a day after Cole tied things up with Schilling, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes broke the record first, with a 57th and 58th straight strikeout since his last walk.
In fact, Burnes set his own record of 52 strikeouts without a walk to start the season as well, that he extended to 58 before finally walking a batter.
The record dates back to 1893, when the mound was moved to its current distance from the plate.
Cole should have a chance to break the record next Monday when the Yankees face the Rangers in Texas.

It is a cool record, but, without looking I would guess it is easier to amass strikeouts now than it was 20 years ago and significantly easier today than it was 30+ years ago.
can you imagine what numbers Pedro would be putting up today?
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
