Thrilled to find my amazing set stopper coin. What was yours

Found this gorgeous standing liberty quarter to finish my 20th century century type set. Original surfaces blazing luster attractive toning good strike for a 26d. Looks like eye appeal of a 66. And for only $300.

Thanks I am so thrilled when I opened the package

That's actually more head detail than I can recall seeing on quite a few 1926-D SLQs. Aren't these one of the dish-head dates?

  • Really nice, congratulations!

Great coin, great deal....and how wonderful you were happy when you opened the package! What collecting should be!

Yes 26d is notorious for flat head dish look. Passed on a beautiful 26d because the head looked like the head was smashed with a hammer

So, if it's a type set, why didn't you pick a different year?? Is there more to the story??

My two white whales were an 76s DDO trade and a 76p 2/2. I had two amazing coins and I miss them. I may never love a coin as much as those two. But it was time to move on and there is no point holding on to specialist items that take a specialist to move. My kids would have sold them for type to a pawn shop for 50% of bid all while high 5ing for getting over melt

    Still looking......1817/14.....

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

I’m dreading a similar outcome for my coins someday....

Back to the op, nice pickup.
I recently acquired a 20D walker in AU 55, been many years waiting on that one. Third lowest pops in AU in the series.
Now I need that 1799 large cent....

To lakesammman. I bought this 1926 d because I couldn’t find a slq type coin under $400 that had amazing eye appeal and checked all my boxes so I sacrificed on the full head. Also this coin looks to be close to a 65 grade and maybe under graded

Why not arrange to have them sold by Heritage or Stack’s for your kids?

When I cared at one time, my set stopper was a 1877 IHC in 65-66 red. There were a lot of ugly so called red IHC's and the only one I ever saw that was personally acceptable was snapped up by Blay, raw in a Stacks auction. So, I settled for this one, PCGS MS66RB.

    Congrats on your acquisition!

I forgot that you were once a very serious IHC collector. I think of you more as the luncheon slab guy!

Because I am still in my prime :)

Jokes aside I don’t really believe in forever sets. I want to keep moving and keep learning. I have a few to remember it and move on once progress is futile

Nothing wrong with selling the coins and moving on. Lots of collectors do that. It can help with budget for especially big coins.

Do you have photos of the coins to share?

Thanks so much. Do you think this coin could upgrade. I can’t figure out why 64. Coin has such a look of a 66, and I don’t see any marks of any consequence. I can send you a blown up picture if will help

@robbylu52.... That would be a gamble.... It is a nice coin, but I would hesitate to give you a conclusion from pictures. May be worth the gamble... Cheers, RickO

This was the last coin I needed for the copper portion of my clipped Lincoln set. I went nearly 25 years without seeing one, when a Forum member sent me a link to a dealer in CA who had it sitting on his web site. Two weeks after I bought it, another one popped up on eBay.

@USSID17 - that is a picture perfect choice 1885 Liberty nickel! Very tough coin you seldom see above Fine....and that one looks looks under graded at Vf 20.

Thanks walker! It's nice to hear that from one of you guys. Considering I'm not a professional numismatist or key player here. I'm just a hobbyist filling holes.

I looked long and hard for this coin. One with the right grade, price range and look (eye appeal). It pretty much matches and keeps the consistent look of the rest of the album.... Plus, it had to have all "LIBERTY" showing.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Nice you found what you needed. People don’t understand how hard it is to find the right coin even though there are so many internet coins

Yes, I guess it's all about the journey, the hunt, the search and the find, which makes the results rewarding.
