When I made my confirmation at 13 you had to chose a Saints name. I choose Carl. Only problem was there is no Saint Carl. When I went up to see the Bishop he called me out on it and seemed genuinely pissed off. His pointy hat seemed to go crooked. He said why Carl and that there was no Saint Carl. I told him Yaz was my patron Saint. He said whoa. He whispered in my ear he was a Sox fan and said he would let it slide but to play along. He announced I would choose Charles as my Saint but winked to me.

I even taught myself to bat left handed and my stance and swing was a cross between Yaz and my other favorite player. Dick McAuliffe. I'm a self taught switch hitter and can golf, bowl, ambi at hoops, bat and throw a football from either side. It served me well growing up. Hockey I always shot from the left side.

    Lou Brock
    Mel Gray
    Marvin Barnes
    Garry Unger

I was aware that there were players outside St. Louis, and there were even players I rooted for, but at 10 years old all of my favorites were still on the home teams.

This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

I remember crying when my Wings traded Unger for Red Berenson. I later went on to love and know Red when he coached U of M. Bill Freeman was the Michigan baseball coach

Basketball- Tie between Willis Reed and Walt Frazier.
Hockey- None. Rural Kansan here, hockey did not exist in my world.
Baseball- Willie Stargell, was still mourning the loss of Clemente in 1974
and the rise of the second great one, George Brett, was still in the future.
Football- Len Dawson and Otis Taylor.
Confirmation name- Luke, and yes my Priest was pleased with the choice. :p

I was obsessed with the expansion hockey teams in the 70’s especially the short lived Kansas City Scouts. Guy Charron was my jam. They stunk up Kemper Arena which I think was built for them.

    great list

I've never heard of the Kansas City Scouts, didn't know they had a hockey team.
I do remember KC had a pro basketball team for a while but I don't think it lasted long.

As hard as I try, I seriously can't think of any player who was my "favorite" when I was a kid. The only one that comes to mind is Wes Parker. He was a terrific fielding first baseman for the Dodgers. He mailed me a his autograph and a nice little note when I was 11 years old. So....that made me happy. That's all I can come up with. And, at that age I was a sports nut. Dodgers, Lakers, UCLA, and of course the RAMS! BUT......can't think of a favorite player.

Even though the Brady Bunch stopped making new episodes in 1974 (2 years before I was born) it lived on pretty heavily in reruns. Enough so that I watched all of the episodes growing up, both as an adolescent and a teenager.

Roberto Clemente. Can't get him out of my mind since I first read this thread. So.....Roberto Clemente it is. I have my personal reasons.....A great player, A nice guy, and a HERO. I saw him play in the first major league game I ever attended. He made an impression on this little kid....A REAL HERO.
P.S. He also mailed me an autograph and a kind note when I was a kid. I still have it. Baseball is a way of life.

    Brady Bunch
    Happy Days
    Laverne and Shirley

All of these played non stop till around 1980ish

As far as sports heroes for me when I was 10 in 1980
For me even at that age I was a huge football fan and was a huge fan of Franco Harris, Earl Campbell and Walter Payton

In the 80's though it was very easy to have heroes outside of football Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Cal Ripken, Pete Rose (Before Gambling), could go on and on

So so many sports heroes in the 80's
