I hope that he signs with the Cardinals and retires and maybe this was the way to make that happen. I hope they gave him the option to retire and not be released.

Wait til he gets inducted on a first time ballot to the HOF if you think his card values rocketed with the boom.

cards will sign him for the league min. get some scrub to float him in a grapefruit that he goes yard on, then announce his retirement and go out like a champ. it's been written.

    Most likely! LOL

I'd love to see him retire a Cardinal as well.

Also, glad I just picked up one of those rare 2001 Topps Reserve Rookie Auto pre-encapsulated cards last week. :)

2.5 is pretty much my speed.

Well didn't he and Molina say that they would love to play together one last time? This is probably the vehicle that facilitates that. He can have some fun in St. Louis, take a few victory laps around the National League, hang out with his buddy, and then maybe retire mid-season if the Cards need the roster room.

Or he gets he Cards mojo back and hits 40 home runs the rest of the season.

i would have a very hard time not enjoying that! 😉

Two careers: One awesome in STL and one bad in LAA. Overall, all-time great and 1st ballot HOF. Man, the Angels got almost nothing for that mega contract. I am a Pujols fan and I am all for players getting big contracts.

albert pujols and ken griffey jr, and george brett are my all-time favorite players i have ever watched.

A super high level all time great.

One of the greats! Don’t think this is the end of the road for him unless he wants it to be, but don’t see a fit on the Cardinals without the DH in the NL. Think an AL team will pick him up - just costs the league minimum. He was a bad fit with the Angels with Ohtani and how Walsh has started playing. Would be a good fit for Seattle.

A guy like that should go out on his own terms.

    A Pujols/Larussa reunion in Chicago?

I hate to be the kill joy but he isn't a good fit for anyone, he doesn't have the tools anymore. An all time great no doubt but it's the end of the road.

Successful coin BST transactions with Gerard and segoja.

Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.

I'm sure they did, but he doesn't get the $30 million left on his contract if he retires. If he has anything left he can sign with another team. They'll have to pay him the league minimum and the Angels' liability will be reduced by that amount.

Could easily have happened a couple of years ago. Best first baseman not named Gehrig, and it's not even close (to either first or third).

I would say he and Foxx are pretty close - would give the nod to Pujols but I do not thing one is significantly better than the other.

WOW! A class act player & human being!
Cards or somebody, go ahead and sign him up.
Woulda liked to see Albert work his way up on the all-time hit list

It's painful to watch Miggy struggle.
Has he passed Ruth yet in hits?

Glad to see Albert call it. A great for sure, but he probably should have hung it up 4 or 5 years ago. he fell off a cliff after the 2016 season and has been a bad to very bad player since.

it makes you wonder if he is really around 45 now and was turning 40 or so back then?

Those long contracts seldom work out for the team

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • scmavlscmavl Posts: 1,409 ✭✭✭

He fell into the Mickey Mantle trap of being a .300+ hitter who played one season too long and ends up with a sub-.300 lifetime BA.

2.5 is pretty much my speed.
  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,251 ✭✭✭✭✭

he destroyed his slash lines by hanging on these last 5 years. he did manage to earn well over 100MM though, so I would consider it well worth it for Albert.

He's hitting better than anyone on their team right now... and he's batting under .200

He tied Babe last night. He was 0 for 27 prior to that hit. He did report to spring training in fabulous shape though . . .

Looks like he had a couple of different options. Went for the ring instead of playing time.

Here's another twist to the story:

Remember all the hoopla when Albert went back and played against the Cardinals a year or two ago?

Well, now he'll be back there again September 6-9 with the Dodgers, playing against the Cardinals.

I was there and it was epic. Got a video of the homerun.

By the way... RBI single in his second AB tonight.
