Here's the 1865 from my type set.
Purchased at my favorite local coin store about 20 years ago.
And my Whitman album, where most of my 3CNs reside.
Mostly I collect photos and do research.
(First 2 photos from PCGS CoinFacts)
Shorthand for reverse crack patterns, in base 12, like hexadecimal!
1,207 files in the 1866 folder, which is the one I studied.
First 36 of the 81 die pairs I found.
Die pairs where the dies are used with more than one other die.

I put this together in the 90's. Haven't added to it since. The 87/6 from raw one later than the 90's.
I have a couple. A proof and a business strike both from 1869.

Very impressive!
@1946Hamm It's great to see a set like that!
I have quite a few more to image and post.. the series I say is just about impossible to complete.
An old local coin shop owner who had his location for over 40 year once told me that he put a 1/4 ad in coin world looking for key ms specimens. He had plenty of replies.....all proof coins....that were released in the wild....not 1 was mint state.

Just enough for my Type Set.
My only one. Got sometime in the 1990s but I don't remember where.
Not sure what's going on with the T and S in States. Looks like grease filled dies but I doubt I could have afforded an error in the 90s.
Wouldn't be totally surprised if it was a fake actually.
Just this one. I thought I had another I could put in my 7070, but I must not.

Looks like grease filled dies to me.

The 1865 B27b plate photo on p. 106 of Gifford's book looks like a fairly close match.
He called it "CLOGGED OBVERSE DIE".
This book is rare, but can be viewed on the Newman Numismatic Portal.

Here’s the one I have a picture of. I think I have a circulated one, also, but I’ll have to find it.
Very nice coins here... Never had one of the 3CN coins..... Tiny coins like that just never appealed to me... Cheers, RickO
3CNs are the same diameter as a dime (17.9 mm).
So they are not quite as small as:
And they were the 1st attemp to strike in the nickel copper materials, followed by the shield nickel. As before most were struck in silver.

Several nice pieces! Here's my plastic that happens to include a 3c piece. Thought I had a Hall flip too - maybe not.
