ANSWERED: Dan Carr 1964 Peace Dollar Question

I want one of these really bad (it's my dream coin). Does anyone know how many he minted? I hope one day I can afford one but I can't right now and if he minted quite a bit of them I can happily hold off for a few years until I can afford one.

Carr sure did play with these a lot! I did not realize that he made additional runs after the 1,964 mintage. I have one of the first die pair "5" with 222 mintage. I like the look of the new die pair "9".

There are a couple thousand of these out there. I am sure you can find one later with some looking. If you are after a specific die pair it may be a bit more difficult to find it.

Prices of the Carr 1964 Peace aren't what they used to be. If you shop patiently around on the BST, you might be able to find something in your price range. A lazy (on my part) ebay search found 4 examples for sale around $300 and an awful Aliexpress counterfeit for $7 including shipping.

Successful BST: dmwjr, ike126, bajjerfan, morganman94, sonoradesertrat, 12voltman, duiguy, gsaguy, gsa1fan, martin, coinfame, zas107, bothuwui, gerard, kccoin, jtwitten, robcool, coinscoins, mountain_goat, and a few more.

Should be able to find them on eBay. I picked some up when they were first offered by Dan.

I would imagine there are some nice ones out there!

    1,964 mintage of a 1964 Peace.

    Didn't know that.

Why not post a WTB on the BST forum?

To collect an entire set of the 1964 D die pairs - you'd need to collect 23 coins or so. It would make an interesting set.

I should have grabbed one of these when first available.... Was busy with another project and figured it could wait... Oh well...The other project did really well. ;) Cheers, RickO

Agree -- but at that time, I thought why. No with the 2021 coming out - might be nice to have.

They are cool, but I would rather get the real coin the mint is issuing this year. It will cost less than one of those too.

you don't think it will be a 45 minute computer logjam sellout?

I think the mintages are high enough that it won't be.

    You'd be surprised

Even if it is a sellout, the mintage limit of 200,000 makes all but certain the secondary market will be weak. Hell, at that amount buying from the Mint at $85 may not be the smart way to buy them... but I'm going to anyway.

If you don't win the 2021 battles when they go on sale, keep checking at 7:30 am EST every day. There is a long time between a May on-sale and October shipment and the mint is going to have a lot of reconciled (canceled) orders and outright cancellations during the summer...

Is the Mint making a 1964?

No, although they did and then melted them all. Some say that a few got out but I'll believe that when one surfaces, it would promptly be confiscated if it did so I don't think that will ever happen.
