This was found at a Mission era site in CA. It's about the sized of a half dollar. It appears to be die struck and the hole on the hasp was hand drilled and the edges are hand filed.

That is a nice medal.... How have you confirmed it is silver? Cheers, RickO
The site was abandoned in 1830. We found no coins or artifacts that dated after that. It has the metallic look of countless silver coins I've found with a metal detector. It's heavy like silver and did not corrode. There were only a few white metals available during that time, tin, pewter and silver. The other two would not have been this well preserved. So I guess, deductive reasoning.
Nice find!
Nice I like
I love this!

You should have a jeweler test it... Just nice to confirm, not necessary. Cheers, RickO
Nice back story. Abandoned mission. What county? Just curious.

It was on a stage route between missions in Monterey County.
If that medal could talk.... Could have been lost during an Indian attack, or by an early immigrant passing through.... Ah the history that is lost.... though probably the imagination (in most cases) is far more exciting. Cheers, RickO
Very cool. I live near El Camino Real in the south land. Most of it paved over, but there are sections that were not.
