I think they were very accurate in the early days of SEGS. But I quit grading with them maybe 5 years after they started grading, so anything after that I wouldn't know. I do know that I cherried a 1916 proof Buff 5c in an MS65 SEGS slab for $100 back in 2006. I still have that coin-

After the initial wave, there were a couple of organizations that tried to get approved, but there didn't seem to have been any motion. And nothing has changed since then, despite a bunch of changes in the industry.
Initially, it seemed like a major reason some TPGs weren't included was due to cert verification and pop reports, but now more TPGs do have them.
I'm curious if Larry Briggs is still connected to SEGS? Someone said that the business was sold. Someone once complemented him saying that what Briggs has forgotten (in numismatics) was more than he knew.
In 1998 Larry, and others developed SEGS: Coin Grading Service (SEGS). SEGS offers individuals, dealers, and investors affordable and accurate grading, expert attribution, authentication services and encapsulation. The SEGS capsule provides an inert environment that protects and preserves the physical condition of the coin. SEGS headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Hey Burton - couldn't agree more. Like most of us old fossils, it is in need of a fresh update.

KDC auctions in NJ appears to deal with SEGS directly. Majority of their coins auctioned are SEGS slabs. Give KDC a call, maybe someone there has the answer.
Yes, I called that number about 30 minutes ago. A real nice girl answered. She was trying to be helpful. She only had the numbers off SEGS's website, which I've been using for the past 2 weeks with no luck. Seems like no one's home at SEGS.

Ok. It was a shot since they were in the same state just down the road from each other too. Good luck in your search.

Hey, let me ask you guys a personal question. Should I not be talking or asking about other TPG'ers on a PCGS forum?
Forum rule #4 only says "Posts promoting or bashing other grading companies or services are not allowed.". I don't see this string as promoting or talking bad about them.

I think it also depends upon whom you are writing about. The forum rule isn't written to include that, but discussing NGC vs. discussing SEGS likely generates a different in-house response from moderation.

I think we can discuss this topic. One big reason it is to day those SEGS slabs will be in the hands of the PCGS. "OAKSTAR" been on PCGS forum do not mean I will not discuss defunct TPG and how will be receive by PCGS. I think you do not understand very well rule #4.
** "Posts promoting or bashing other grading companies or services are not allowed."** Sorry OAK but if I have a slab say MS-68 for example, I want to know the opinions of PGGS's members and maybe some from inside if is somehow accurate. We discuss about defuncts TPG;s not active ones. You has to understand bashings an promote meanings.
For SEGS I do not have to much information's but what I see on my certifications I have from the first years and was almost precise. The lasts years ones it is a joke. So if you has those do not submit, except you want to has a nice bad surprise.

One thing SEGS has going for it is that those slabs that ARE in the database, some of them tell you when they were graded. If you think that XYZ Corp of 1995 is not the same standards as XYZ Corp of 2005, it's more precise than trying to sequence labels.

I like SEGS and I like the long time owner, Larry Briggs. That said, they never innovated enough to catch on, and I think their ship has sailed. You can trust the variety attributions, and the grades aren't always unreasonable, but their acceptance in the national marketplace is more or less third world status, even if it's not quite so deserved.

Anyone know how Larry is doing? I stopped by his office in or near Lima, Ohio some years ago but he was not in.
A common gem Morgan in a segs holder sold for around $120 a few days ago. It looked accurate to me.
Copper. Early days. It confused people and they stopped.

Ii worked his table at Central States, he's doing a little better, getting around better. His 'gift of gab' is as strong as ever!
Has anyone submitted coins to SEGS lately?

A search for Briggs turns up this site: https://www.larrybriggsrarecoins.com/
The about us on the site doesn't say he is not...

No, he sold it a while a ago, few years possibly.
His website is out of date, he's having trouble with it, can't add or subtract inventory. He is active at the bigger shows in his area.
Is SEGS still an active viable company?

Their domain expires end of August. Might see something then. I did a little scan on fleaBay, the most recent coin I found was graded last August.
I did not - although this was not scientific nor exhaustive - find many higher cert#s or later than 2022-08-29.
