Question about the 1961 Franklin in the US Mint Set.

Hi again, I brought a 1961 Set awhile back and decided to open up the envelope. I noticed that the Franklin half dollar had a small burnt like mark on it. Why did this happen? Does it lower the value? Thanks all!!! Let me know if you want a better pic, I can try to get a better one next week.

In that picture (blurry) I only see some (I think) wrinkled plastic... Will await better pictures. Cheers, RickO

Yes, a spot of that size and location would lower value IMO.

I have a couple of Kennedy Halves with the same issue, but much smaller and on the reverse.

Not as bad but annoying since they are Accented Hair varieties.

As to why... I will leave that to the experts.

Firstly, this is a Proof set, not a Mint set. Mint sets have 10 coins of which 5 are Denver mint. Secondly, the spot is tarnish, probably caused by a pinhole in the cellophane enclosure. I.ve seen a lot of this.

Could I please have my avatar back? All of the pictures you are sourcing are associated with members. Would you kindly locate a picture not on the PCGS site. Last request.

    Have a nice day

A sense a bigger issue here....

You indicated that you "decided to open up the envelope"...

Are you buying "sealed" proof sets, hoping for some hidden treasure inside?

There has been some debate on this subject and I don't think there has been a final consensus, but at least some/most of these sets were sold unsealed. Over the years the gum often sealed due to humidity. Or, a dealer may have intentionally sealed it, or even replaced the original envelope with a modern replacement (and then sealed it).

There is a good chance that if you bought that as a sealed set, the seller knew the coin had issues.

I brought this about 10 years ago and just decided to open it. I wouldn't know if it was resealed or if the seller knew about this but I don't really mind. I believe I brought it back then for under $20.

No real loss (or risk) then. :)

The quarter looks very nice, a possible Cameo if the reverse devices and fields have the same appearance as the obverse devices and fields.
