A coin dealer will hopefully tell you the same thing the experts here will tell you.
The posts get out of order with the "ask a question" function of this board. You'll see my post has a 10:29 timestamp but the OP comment above it in the list has a 10:33 timestamp. Answers that are accepted just sort of pop up to the top. I am not a fan of this functionality and wish they would just remove it.
I agree with what JBK said, a dealer will tell you the same. I am not sure what these are worth if selling it is your goal, but definitely worth something.Collector, occasional seller

ChrisH821 nailed it.
I'm not sure a local coin shop would know what it is
if you showed it to them, aside from maybe saying
'it looks like a struck thru'Struck Thru a late stage (thinning) Die Cap is more accurate
than just 'struck thru'.Retired Collector & Dealer in Major Mint Error Coins & Currency since the 1960's.Co-Author of Whitman's "100 Greatest U.S. Mint Error Coins", and the Error Coin Encyclopedia, Vols., III & IV. Retired Authenticator for Major Mint Errors

What is a post mint damage ?PMD (post mint damage) is just was it says: damage after it left the mint and not a mint error. However, this is an error and a good one. @FredWeinberg is the expert of experts on errors and he replied exactly what it is. Believe him above all others.

storage options if you decide to keep it - the local coin store may sell a single nickel air-tite for $1-$1.50 or so. https://air-tites.com/collections/direct-fit-air-tite-coin-holders/products/direct-fit-air-tite-a21
cardboard holder for a nickel - these generally go for a nickel to a dime each - https://air-tites.com/products/cardboard-1-5x1-5s?variant=36783249391778
call for availability and pricing of each before you go

there are two dies - obverse and reverse. the obverse die get slammed into the blank on the stationary reverse die.
imagine, for some reason, a coin gets stuck to the obverse die. it will be repeatedly slammed into the new blanks. in the process the stuck coin will get thinner and thinner.

Struck Thru a late stage (thinning) Die Cap is more accurate
is what is described above.
as already noted by others, this is not a common error.

I have a Jefferson nickel that looks just like the one posted by the OP.
One of my few error coins and one of my favorites.
Another Jefferson I have is a split planchet where I have the reverse half of the coin. Wish I also had the obverse of the coin.

@brooklyn12... Welcome aboard.... You have the determination of @FredWeinberg, who also serves as the TPG expert on error coins.... followed by supporting conclusions of other knowledgeable collectors. You should get the coin slabbed as an error. Cheers, RickO

Yes, that looks like a struck through late stage die cap.

Thank you all !!! I am only on here a few hours and i already LOVE it ....you guys are awesome
Not to be the troublemaker here, but does anyone think this might be post-mint damage? Just trying to cover all possibilities
What is a post mint damage ?
Something done after it left the mint like putting the coin on a grinding wheel. I'm hoping not but someone here with more experience than me can weigh in. Just making sure
wow ...alot of info .....one more question if not a local dealer ..does anyone have a recommendation on who i would contact ...
Capped die strike... not very common.
What are you trying to accomplish? Sell it? Then dealer, Ebay, or here on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.
@ErrorsOnCoins
@FredWeinberg
Can maybe give an idea of value.
im hoping to sell it ...but not knowing much about coins ..its a good idea to get some knowledge behind it ...but now i have a bug for it ....Thank you all for your input ..much appreciated !
