If anyone is looking for a PCGS Doily gold $20., this one just got listed on eBay

It looks like a decent graded coin without a heavy premium for being a Doily.
(Obviously, not my auction, nor do I know the seller. I just wanted to pass along a neat deal for someone looking...)

Doesn’t count without the outer ring.
Thank you for posting.
Without the outer ring or frame, I consider this to be a damaged and incomplete slab and not worth any premium.

Thank you for this information!!
I dont believe that rattlers had the outer ring.

the doily and several generations after it were simply the first attempt by PCGS to combat counterfeit holders. they had the outer ring on the rattlers till they redesigned an entire shell.
I've been under the impression the outer ring is an easy replacement with the next generation of the slab that also offered it (or was it the one before?). Either way, it can be "fixed."

Outer ring? We don't need no stinkin' outer ring!! The coin is my focus....and will likely go for a holder premium. Not from my wallet though...Cheers, RickO
The outer plastic ring or frame is one piece of plastic and you would have to break it to remove it from a common slab in order to put on a less common slab. I'm not saying that it can't be done but you'll need some glue to fix the break and it would be visible with careful examination under magnification.

Could you preserve the ring by “breaking” the slab inside, perhaps with a drill?
Yes but how would you put it on another slab without first breaking it?

I agree, once the outer ring is gone, the coolness/premium is gone.

what is this "outer Ring"?
Not sure, just speculating.
A consequence of not collecting doilies
I believe he meant "outer frame" which is a separate piece of rectangular plastic that went around the outside perimeter of the slab and was designed to be an anti-counterfeiting feature.

Not totally gone but premium is reduced by 50%.
I wouldn’t want it, at any price, as I consider it damaged.

I think the price is very high given that the slab is incomplete, but that is just my opinion.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I thought it was a decent deal for someone, yet upon reflection and after reading the posts here on this thread, I've changed my mind.
Instead of deleting, though, I'll just let it run its course.
I'm always on the look-out for sweet deals on eBay and honestly thought this one was a hit at first glance.

The outer rings on this, and the following generation, are two pieces. They were sonically sealed together meaning sound waves are used to vibrate the pieces against each other until they melt. The sealing on the rings was hit or miss and some can be separated enough to be used to restore a doily to completeness if you know how.
