Oh my, another crazy 1921 Peace dollar result!

Maybe someone thinks it's a 65, the other 64's also did well but not this well.

My first thought was tape residue!

I don't like it.
Not for me
There is some very strikingly smooth fields beyond the devices. I might even venture to say they are remarkably’ ‘almost’ prooflike in appearance. The dark reverse cameo appearance is unusual and clearly attracted someone’s attention as well.
Skin Toning is slightly reminiscent of a dermatology disorder known as vitiligo impetigo.
With no disrespect, perhaps a buyer might be attracted to this feature?
Maybe a Dermatoligist?
Or an artist interested in the art and beauty sometimes perceived in this phenomenon?
Perhaps even an individual personally touched with this pigment disorder?
I am right there! Having some vitiligo and a peculiar tendency to collect oddball and curious pieces that touch me personally.
I am not the buyer in this case though. And I do not collect coins which remind me of dermatology cases.
(I know it’s a stretch and it’s late. I have insomnia and am recovering from a rather unpleasant oral surgery adventure- so one might take my comments with a grain of salt).

I don't care for it.
Fugly color not for me either
Ugly, not my taste at all.

You're right.... CRAZY.
almost certainly the color is killed from looks like scanned images. i tried tinkering with the image but only brought a little color to life. the result wasn't worth sharing. i hope to see true images of this one some day.
That is overall fugly.
I do like the obverse fields... Looks like tape residue to me also. I bet it gets cracked out and cleaned up.

The buyer is probably thinking with the proper curation it could land in an MS65 slab. On a side note: it wasn't too long ago these sold in 64 for about $750. or so, right?

UUUUUGLY.... However, it does look like residue, and an acetone bath 'should' remove it....The devices look really nice and the fields seem to be clean. Cheers, RickO
Yes they have increased quite a bit this year (coinciding with the 100th anniversary).
As others have noted, maybe a possibility it will upgrade, after the removal of whatever it is. Wonder what I could get for my 64?
Not a fan of the toning. It would be hard for me to get past that before I could even consider this coin.

But it brought well over 65 money.

As I look at that coin it starts to grow on me ...
the toning is ugly but overall the coin looks nice
always hit your enemy where they least expect it
Not sure about that one...
I am interested to see what the 64+ brings at GC this weekend. I expect it to be pretty strong.

The toning pattern suggests to me, "thumbed" prior to submission many years ago.
Some substance, (possiblity but not necessarily finger or nose oil) gently rubbed in certain areas to mask and blend luster breaks.
Has since toned interestingly, not a fan of the look myself. I'd be careful not to dip this before close inspection, might (probably) worse after.
Market acceptable now, generally, and obviously gets a strong premium from both toned peace and OGH collectors.

That is an ugly 64.
All the 1921 peace dollars seam to be selling high. two months ago an Au 58 sold for $420 at Heritage Auctions. Got my 1921 Au 58 for on only $240 last June.
Oh my!! Don't understand that at all.

Everybody is paying too much? Perhaps a reconsideration of their current value is in order.
Old holder, exceptional strike; probably a prooflike or obverse proof variety. There are collectors for all the HR varieties of these.
Nah...if I don't like the price, it's because everyone else is crazy.
Vitiligo impetigo variety still holds. Even after a little sleep and before pain meds ;-)

Just wow....
I paid $35 for this one, granted it was a very long time ago, and it’s only AU, but still....
Just an update on the comment I made above about the GC auction. It sold for a little over $1500

I actually thought it would go for a good bit more since it is a nice looker and it is an unattributed Vam 1H.
Let me know if you want to double your money

$1701 with buyers fee
Now a few hundred dollars coin
This coin aside, with the crazy price paid, Peace dollars in general seem to be doing fairly well.
I had priced my complete Dansco set, with a number of toners in it (including that 21P) to a forum member a few years ago at a pretty fair price, and he passed, so I decided to just keep it. Last year, a member REALLY wanted my toned 28P, so I sold it to him. In time, three other members bought most of the rest of them, the total well exceeding what I had quoted for the full set, and I still have a few of my faves left that I decided are NFS.
I wonder what it would look like if someone skilled in the art gave it an expert dip. Could it regrade MS66?
