Looking for information on this pattern $10 Morgan design

anablepanablep Posts: 5,158 ✭✭✭✭✭

Until today, I had no idea this existed. Does anyone have information regarding this pattern J-1581 Morgan ten dollar coin? Total trial mintage and whether it was seriously considered for production? I think it's quite stunning and the Liberty design seems much "cleaner" without the typical shrubbery of cotton, wheat & maple leaves in her hair & cap as minted on the dollar. The eagle is similar to other half dollar and dollar patterns of the Morgan design.

Just found this listing at HA also for a J-1582 pattern. Not nearly as nice as the one pictured in my first post.

The HA listing claims to be the only one known outside of museums. So the OP coin is obviously a museum piece.

Two different Judd numbers: 1581 and 1582

I found two links that refer to J-1581 as being R-8(1-3) and another link which makes reference to this pattern by saying "the coin" in the description which leads me to infer one struck. I think if you just wait for the auction description to be posted by Heritage that the mystery will be solved.

Thanks; I didn't know there was a half eagle too.

Thanks keets, agreed; I'm not good at waiting...

Wow 🤩 why didn’t they mint theses as a regular issue back in the late 19th century. Is gorgeous 🤩🤩🤩

There are also two known specimens of Barber's design struck in gold. Again, only one in private hands.
