1978 COUNTER STAMPED:   CAMP DAVID PEACE SUMMIT
BEGIN - SADAT - CARTER
SEPT. 5 - 17 1978

ONLY 1000 COINS COUNTER STAMPED AND RELEASED

The Camp David Accords were a pair of political agreements signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on 17 September 1978, following twelve days of secret negotiations at Camp David, the country retreat of the President of the United States in Maryland.[1] The two framework agreements were signed at the White House and were witnessed by President Jimmy Carter. The second of these frameworks (A Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel) led directly to the 1979 Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty. Due to the agreement, Sadat and Begin received the shared 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. The first framework (A Framework for Peace in the Middle East), which dealt with the Palestinian territories, was written without participation of the Palestinians and was condemned by the United Nations.

IN THE WORDS OF THE DESIGNER, MEL WHACKS:

I was thrilled, along with millions of others around the world, when the Camp David Accords were signed by Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on September 17, 1978, following twelve days of secret negotiations at Camp David. The two agreements were signed at the White House, and were witnessed by United States President Jimmy Carter. The Accords led directly to the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty, which among other things, established full diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt, and contained about 50 normalization agreements covering a variety of issues, including economic and cultural matters, designed to enhance peace between the two countries..

While I was watching this historic event on television I was inspired to commemorate it. And I immediately thought of counterstamping “Peace” Silver Dollars (that were issued beginning in 1921 to celebrate the end of World War I). I believe that it was Ed McClung who had created the first two counterstamped coins, and so I asked him to do the Camp David counterstamp. I gave him dozens of uncirculated 1922 and 1923 Peace Dollars to use for prototypes. But he had problems. The design that I requested was more complex than the first two counterstamps, inscribed “CAMP DAVID PEACE SUMMIT SEPT. 5-17, 1978” and featuring the peace symbol, the names of the participants and appropriate symbols: BEGIN + Star of David, SADAT + Crescent, and CARTER + 5-Pointed Star. He was unable to make a bold counterstamp, even after reaming off an area and stamping it.

And so I asked someone else to give it a try – Adam Cool, who had created a number of counterstamped coins for the American Israel Numismatic Association. Adam was successful, so we photographed it and sent out press releases a relatively short time after the event had occurred.

The press release and a picture was featured in the coin column of the Sunday New York Times– and then all hell broke loose!  In a few days the mailman started bringing piles of envelopes with orders. This continued day after day, and within a relatively short time the entire authorized mintage of 1,000 pieces was sold. These coins are actively collected, appear periodically on ebay, and the “Camp David” counterstamp is featured in the newly published “A Guide Book of Peace Dollars” by Roger Burdette.

The 1993 counterstamp peace dollar

Whilst the Peace Accord between the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and Israel disintegrated after a Zionist extremist assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Rabin on 4 November 1995, the above coin is an interesting commemorative of the accord, and encouragement for a future peace.

The host coin is a United States "Peace" silver dollar issued after the Great War (World War I) counterstamped with a special punch dated 1993.

50 of these were issued in Norway, and presented to, among others:

Johan Jørgen Holst (the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs)
Terje Rød-Larsen (architect of the agreement)
Mona Juul (architect of the agreement)
Jan Egeland
Yitzhak Rabin (Israeli prime minister)
William Jefferson Clinton (US president)
Yasser Arafat (chairman of the Palestinian Authority)
Sheik Yassin (head of Hamas)
Mahmoud Abbas (architect of the agreement)
Ehud Barak (Israeli Chief of the IDF)
Yossi Beilin (architect of the agreement)
Ron Pundak (architect of the agreement)
Shimon Peres (architect of the agreement)

A few undistributed pieces appeared on the auction market in the late 1990s after the dissolution of the host organisation. They are very rare, and while some sold at auction for as much as 1500 euros, a few have sold around 2005-2006 on eBay, mostly from an American coin dealer who obtained about eight pieces from a Christie's New York auction. These brought lower prices, averaging about $500 to $750. This group has since been dispersed, mostly to collectors in Israel and Saudi Arabia.

I have seen the same text on the 1993 coins but the report of acmintage of 50 pieces is surely incorrect. Based on what I have seen on ebay over the past several years there are many more than that around. (I have one of those).

    I have both.

USAF (Ret) 1974 - 1994 - The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. Remembering RickO, a brother in arms.

I believe the 50 that is mentioned are the ones set aside for dignitaries..I couldn’t find total amount stamped...there was a report of 10k but I cannot locate it now

    That sounds correct.

The asking prices on these have reached ridiculous levels on the Bay of E.

I was interested in one of these back in the early 2000's....Looked for them at shows in the PNW, but did not see any.... Eventually moved on to other things (completing my CC Morgan series).... Might look around again... likely very expensive now. Cheers, RickO

One of 4 slabbed by NGC, 3 ms62 and 1 MS63. This is number 30/65. One MS63 is number 968/3500 and one ms62 is 240/350. The third ms62 I could not locate. In contacting the Salvador Dali museum in Israel I could not get an answer as to what the different runs signified.

I think PCGS helps with prices.

I found it, it's the 1981 Reagan dollar and it's on a silver Ike and the counterstrike is proof like. Enjoy.

I have quite a few Mel Wacks products but I never did get his Camp David coin.

I do have the other counterstamp issue for Camp David.

The best Mel Wacks purchase I made was the Bicentaler struck on a Maria Teresa Taker, which I gather has increased in value significantly.
