Guardhouse Wood Slab Storage Boxes

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,540 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've been using Guardhouse Wood Slab Boxes to store my coins.

https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/wood-slab-box-30-slabs.html

The slots are pretty tight...it takes a little effort to put an average slab in or take it out. Otherwise, I like them just fine. Has anyone had a problem with these boxes, maybe cracking a slab? Seems unlikely, but...

I have the same box, but a 10 slab for my gold set. The NGCs have a good fit, but the PCGS coin i had in there once was really tight. They definitely fit NGC alot better. I would have to hold the box down while pulling out the PCGS slabs

Those are very nice display/storage boxes.....expensive though. I prefer the coin cabinet storage. Years ago I purchased a couple of different ones off ebay.... They are wood, with storage drawers of different sizes. Can hold raw coins, slabs, 2x2's and even large display containers. That being said, I also have coins like mint sets, albums in cardboard boxes. Cheers, RickO

past experience from some some members relates "off-gassing" from using wood products for storage, especially when the storage boxes themselves are then enclosed.

I would suggest against using this product its aesthetics notwithstanding.

What keets said. If I remember correctly, when the Relative Humidity goes above about 45% wood outgasses corrosive agents

@keets and @Mr_Spud - Thanks! I have removed the coins from the boxes.

Anybody want to buy some gently used wooden boxes?

I try to use the most minimal storage I can find, right now that's just a simple Intercept Shield 2x2 double-row slab box. I have some other stuff stored inside of ziplock bags and one cardboard box, but even that makes me nervous. I think perhaps the most important thing to do, no matter what storage medium and container(safe, SDB, etc): it helps to regularly open it to "change" the atmosphere inside.

FWIW - Lighthouse, a current manufacturer of Intercept storage boxes, specifically recommends against 'frequent/repeated' openings of their products.

Excerpt: "Please note that repeated opening of an INTERCEPT® product reduces its duration of effectiveness. To extend the duration of effectiveness of INTERCEPT® products beyond the 15 years, it is recommended to close it immediately after use and to avoid frequent opening."

I have one of those 30 slab wooden boxes. I only keep my modern gold bullion in it. (AGEs, gold Buffs)
Not too concerned about any toning on those types of pieces. FWIW, I recently checked on them for the first time in maybe 2 years. All looks well! My safe does have humidity control so I’m sure that helps to keep everything safe and sound. For my numismatic coins/gold, I use Lighthouse Intercept boxes. They’re the best IMO.

as often as most collectors are looking at their coins this is sort of a comical suggestion. :p

my suggestion, though, isn't directed at the storage box itself. it is meant to open the safe or visit/open the SDB regularly to change the air.

PCGS came out with their own a decade or so back. I have one, yet it won't hold the current PCGS slabs, only the older generation ones (as the slots are too tight for, the newer ones).

I bought this box for a few bucks from my dealer a few years back. I don't generally store my coins in these type of boxes, but the price was right, so I bought it.
