Is it wrong?
I have a partial 1973 baseball set that i am currently building. i really don't have the desire to finish building it because I am now into HOF player cards from the 60s and 70s. Most of the cards are in excellent to near mint condition with a few creased or soft corner ones thrown in here and there. I am taking out all of the star cards and ones that i would like to keep. I have checklist of all the ones that are in the set and which ones that someone will need to complete it. I was planning on bringing the set to the local card show this weekend to see if anyone wants it. For some reason i feel guilty on taking the good cards out even though I want to only trade for cards that are worth what is in there. i also have the list so the person knows exactly what is in there and what is not. i was planning on coming up with a trade value for what is in there. Am I crazy for thinking it is wrong to take what i want out even though the person will know exactly what is in there?

not at all. it's yours. the only place you could go wrong is misrepresenting what is left. be clear, concise about the scraps and just as important, the condition and you should rest easy, imo.

If your intention is to put the money back into cards anyway, I’d leave the star cards in; a partial set without stars will generate a pretty small percentage of what one with stars will. I think this is true of all ‘partial sets’ though I could be wrong...
You can then use proceeds to ‘rebuy’ other examples of the cards you liked and probably still be well ahead.
Just a thought.
Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?

Just think: There are people out there who collected the stars, want to go for the full set, and are thinking "Ah man, how am I ever going to piece together all these commons I need?"
Match made in heaven.
I know these dealers at the show well enough and trust them for me to even leave the set with them to go through so they know exactly what is in there.
I have a few stars that are really nice. the Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson, Lou Gehrig Record card and nolan ryan/ Steve Carlton LL card. Those are the ones i will keep. the base Nolan Ryan, Cal Yaz, Johnny Bench are in nice condition but off center. those i will leave in.
There’s plenty of people that want sets, get the stars in graded form, but don’t want to spend a bunch for commons.
As long as you don't misrepresent, it's fine.
I absolutely agree. I just recently sold a 1984 Donruss set minus the Mattingly. I figured it would be an easy sell because someone probably has a graded Mattingly and would like to add the rest of the set. Remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
